Scottie Scheffler Is the New No. 1 Golfer in the World
Jon Rahm has been ranked No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking since last year’s Open Championship, but there’s officially a new king of the PGA Tour. After winning his third event in his last five starts on Tour, 25-year-old Scottie Scheffler has dethroned Rahm to become the newest No. 1 golfer in the world.
Scheffler is on one of the most ridiculous hot streaks we’ve seen in recent years, and after reaching the top spot for the first time in his career, he can shift his focus to winning his first major championship.
Scottie Scheffler just won his third tournament in five starts
It’s incredibly hard to win a golf tournament on the PGA Tour.
That statement sounds simple and obvious on the surface, but it’s true. Scheffler didn’t win a single tournament in his first two years as a pro, but after securing his first career victory back in February, the floodgates opened up.
Scheffler shot 62, 67 on the weekend to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open earlier this year. He turned around a few weeks later and won the Arnold Palmer Invitational. After a disappointing finish at The Players Championship, he rebounded by winning the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play with a stress-free victory over Kevin Kisner in the championship match.
That’s now three wins in five starts for the talented Texan. Three wins in five starts! That’s prime Tiger Woods-level dominance right there. No one else on the PGA Tour is playing better than Scheffler right now, and he surely deserves his new title.
Scheffler is the new No. 1 golfer in the OWGR
By winning the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play to keep his hot streak rolling, Scheffler jumped from No. 5 in the OWGR to No. 1. He’s now officially the best golfer on planet earth.
When the calendar flipped to 2022, Scheffler wasn’t even inside the top 10 in the OWGR. He ranked outside the top 1,500 just three years ago. Three wins in two months sure can change things in a hurry.
For reference, Phil Mickelson has 45 PGA Tour victories and six majors to his name, but he’s never held the No. 1 spot on the OWGR. Scheffler made it to the top with three career wins and no majors.
Expect that to change soon.
Scheffler should be the man to beat at the 2022 Masters
Scheffler is quickly building up an impressive resume. He’s now won the fans’ favorite PGA Tour event, one of the toughest tests on the Tour circuit, and a WGC event in the span of a month and a half.
Now, Scheffler can shift his focus to becoming a major champion. The good news? The 2022 Masters is just two weeks away, and Scheffler should legitimately be the man to beat based on his recent results. The youngster has only played in the event twice in his career, but he finished inside the top 20 both times.
Don’t be surprised if the hottest golfer on earth adds a green jacket to his growing trophy case in April.
