Maybe he had a lot of time on his hands. Maybe someone got under his skin. Whatever the case, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton showed he’s both very clever and has a sense of humor. Payton had a very brilliant social media post a couple of weeks ago and many may not have gotten the true meaning of it until further review.

Sean Payton’s coaching career

Sean Payton began his NFL head coaching career with the New Orleans Saints in 2006 and has been going strong ever since. In his first season with the team, Payton was named the Associated Press Coach of the Year after guiding the Saints to a 10-6 record.

In the 2009 season, Payton and the Saints finished with a 13-3 record and were the top seed in the NFC. New Orleans crushed the Arizona Cardinals 45-14 in the divisional round and then outlasted the Minnesota Vikings 31-28 in overtime in the NFC title game to reach the Super Bowl. The Saints knocked off the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 to capture Super Bowl XLIV.

In his 13 seasons as head coach of the Saints, Payton has had four seasons in which his team finished 13-3, including the last two years. His team has finished with double-digit wins eight times. Payton has a career record of 131-77.

Heartbreaking playoff losses

The last three seasons have had some gut-wrenching endings for the New Orleans Saints and their fans. In 2018, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Case Keenum hit Stefon Diggs with a 61-yard touchdown pass as time expired, ending the Saints’ season.

In 2019, the Saints were the victims of a blatant no-call of a pass interference play that played a significant role in the Rams’ win over the Saints. The no-call set Payton off, but at the time the coach was not able to challenge a pass-interference call so the call stood.

Last season, the Vikings, a significant road underdog, stunned the Saints once again. Minnesota quarterback Kirk Cousins hit tight end Kyle Rudolph in the corner of the end zone in overtime as the Vikings advanced.

Sean Payton trolls Falcons fan on Twitter

It all started so innocently. the Atlanta Falcons unveiled their new uniforms in a Twitter post two weeks ago and New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton replied to the post, simply saying “impressive.” An Atlanta Falcons fan chimed in and said “Get back in your bag and provide us some show reviews,” referring to a CNN article that said Payton watched Netflix for three days after the heartbreaking playoff loss to the Rams.

Payton cleverly gave a review that would make any Falcons fan cringe. Payton replied,
“2 musts…Oceans
8 and definitely
Tiger King
One other that is
3rd would be HBOs
Houston we have a problem.”

Although he gave some pretty good movie reviews, he also left a hidden message to that Falcons fan. If you read just the first letter (or number) of each line, it spells ’28 to 3′ which was the score the Falcons were beating the New England Patriots by before their epic collapse in Super Bowl LI. Payton certainly got the last laugh in this Twitter exchange.
