Stetson Bennett’s NFL career is off to an unusual start. It is unclear as to whether it will continue.

That uncertainty is especially true in regard to his future with the Los Angeles Rams. Sean McVay was not willing to provide a definitive answer about whether the rookie quarterback will be back in 2024.

“You know, I don’t know that,” he said when asked if Bennett will be on the team next season. “I think that’s a conversation for another time. I think he’s doing better but I wouldn’t be in a position to answer that accurately right now.”

Bennett was drafted in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft after winning back-to-back national championships at the University of Georgia. There was a lot of doubt that his game would translate to the professional level, but he ultimately proved worthy of a roster spot after an up-and-down preseason and made the final 52-man roster in L.A.

Things quickly turned in the wrong direction.

The Rams added C.J. Beathard as the backup quarterback prior to Week 1 and later signed Carson Wentz. Bennett missed the first game of his NFL career due to what was described as a shoulder injury at the time.

However, Bennett was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list not long thereafter. He never returned.

Not to a game. Not to a practice.

When asked for more information about Bennett’s status in October, McVay offered a concerning response and avoided the question. The 37-year-old head coach said that certain things “are a little bit bigger and more important,” and “out of respect for the particulars and the specifics,” he chose to keep it in-house.

Neither Los Angeles nor Bennett’s camp offered any further explanation for his absence. There is no timetable for an answer to all of the looming questions. There is no indication as to what might be going on.

Amid all of the uncertainty, Stetson Bennett returned back to Athens for a trophy ceremony on Nov. 11. That was his last public appearance. Hopefully everything is alright.
