Washington Commanders Offseason Needs: Five Positions The Commanders Should Address

The Washington Commanders surprised everyone by making it to the NFC Championship game.
They were led by rookie sensation Jayden Daniels who had the best rookie year of any quarterback in history. He had 3,568 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions, 891 rushing yards, and six rushing TDs. Daniels was the main reason the Commanders went from winning four games in 2023 to winning 12 games in 2024.
Washington upset the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round and then defeated the Detroit Lions in the Divisional round. Both games were won on the road for Washington. They lost 55-23 on the road in the NFC Championship game against the Eagles.
After an excellent season, the Commanders enter the offseason with the third most cap space in the NFL. They can build their roster even more through free agency and the draft.
Below are five positions the Washington Commanders need to improve for the 2025 NFL season.
Washington Commanders Offseason Needs
The Washington Commanders surprised everyone by making it to the NFCCG. They have a ton of cap space to bolster their roster. Washington is in a terrific spot as Daniels enters his second season on a rookie contract.
Below are five positions the Commanders need to address in the offseason.
Defensive Line
Run defense was a major weakness for the Washington Commanders this season. Saquon Barkley ran wild on them in all three contests between the Commanders and Eagles. Washington allowed the second most rushing yards per game.
Whether via free agency or in the NFL Draft, the Commanders need to beef up their defensive line and add a massive run-stopper.
Offensive Line
While Jayden Daniels was superb in his rookie season, the offensive line in front of him was not. Daniels was sacked 47 times in 2024, the sixth most in the league. However, the QBs that were sacked more than Daniels had more than 50 pass attempts than Daniels.
The Washington Commanders should prioritize keeping Daniels healthy and upright this offseason. For Daniels’ future, it would be wise to spend on free agency and a first or second-round pick in the NFL Draft on the offensive line.
Defensive Back
Washington boosted their secondary during the 2024 season by acquiring Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints.
Still, they are in a division with the Super Bowl-winning Eagles, who have A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, the Dallas Cowboys, who have CeeDee Lamb, and the Giants, who have Malik Nabers.
Lattimore struggled against Brown in the NFCCG.
Bringing in another CB and possibly a Safety in free agency or the draft would be wise.
Wide Receiver
Terry McLaurin is one of the best wideouts in the league. He is an elite talent, but finally having a capable QB allowed him to show it to every fan.
However, after McLaurin, the WR group is fairly weak. Dyami Brown and Olamide Zaccheaus were the next options at WR. This needs to be addressed. Washington needs to give Daniels another weapon besides McLaurin.
With a lot of cap space, the Commanders should throw a lot of money at Tee Higgins if he becomes available. Higgins paired with McLaurin would be one of the best duos in the league.
Tight End
Zach Ertz was the primary Tight End for the Commanders in 2024. However, Ertz is 34 years old and is not what he used to be.
Besides Ertz, the Commanders do not have a proven TE who can be a playmaker.
The goal for the Commanders is to give Daniels all the weapons at his disposal.
Drafting a TE or signing one in free agency would boost this offense.
