BNP Paribas Open

Eight American tennis players are left in the BNP Paribas Open draw as the Round of 16 begins in each singles discipline: five men and three women.  It has been decades since the American men had five in the final 16, and the women with three players in the Top 10 are cruising along per usual.

Their successes raise the question of whether the Americans can sweep the singles events.  This last happened in 2001 when Andre Agassi and Serena Williams won.  Recent American winners are Taylor Fritz in 2022 and Serena Williams in 2001.

Let’s take a look at the eight players and assess their chances.

1. Taylor Fritz

Fritz is the 2022 BNP Paribas Open champion defeating Rafael Nadal.  He is the top-ranked American man at World No. 4.  This is essentially his home tournament so he playing at Indian Wells and has a lot of crowd support.

He faces Jack Draper on Wednesday.  Fritz is 2-2 against Draper.  He lost the most recent match at the Paris Masters event last year in three tight sets.

2. Tommy Paul

Tommy Paul’s game has been improving steadily over the past 18 months.  Paul is the 10th seed at the BNP Paribas Open, and he has a tough Round of 16 match against 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev.  Medvedev is a two-time BNP Paribas Open finalist, losing in 2023 and 2024 to Carlos Alcaraz.

Paul is 1-3 against Medvedev; two of the three losses came on hard courts.  His one win over Medvedev was on clay.

3. Brandon Nakashima
4. Ben Shelton

Nakashima and Shelton are together in this discussion because they are playing each other in the Round of 16 meaning one will be eliminated.

Shelton has never lost to Nakashima in three previous meetings though their most recent at the 2025 Australian Open was a tight straight-set win, 7-6, 7-5, 7-5.

5. Marcos Giron

Native Californian Marcos Giron has been outstanding at this year’s BNP Paribas Open.  He defeated Casper Ruud and Alexei Popyrin in his previous rounds.  He faces the young Frenchman Arthur Fils in the Round of 16.  20-year-old Fils is ranked 21st and has never played the 31-year-old, 48th ranked Giron.

6. Jessica Pegula

Jessica Pegula has breezed through her early rounds but faces Elina Svitolina next.  She has lost twice to Svitolina in her career with the most recent being last year on clay at the Paris Olympics.  Pegula defeated Svitolina in Doha earlier this year in straight sets.

7. Madison Keys

Madison Keys is having a career year with just one loss so far.  She has two titles, Adelaide, and the big one at the Australian Open.  Keys is playing freely with a lot of confidence and no pressure.  Keys plays Donna Vekic who upset Emma Navarro in the previous round.

8. Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff keeps finding ways to win in each round, but she will need to be at her best against Belinda Bencic who has been blazing hot since coming off maternity leave.

Gauff has a favorable head-to-head record against Bencic including a win at this year’s Australian Open; however, Bencic played better during the Middle Eastern swing, winning the Abu Dhabi Open last month.

There is a good chance American men and women could make it to the semifinals, but Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek are two-time defending champions who have to be considered the favorites to complete the three-peat.
