Ryan Garcia lost a $1.5 million bet to Devin Haney ahead of a boxing match, claiming he would make weight for their WBC Super Lightweight title fight last weekend in Brooklyn.

Garcia, 25, agreed to a wager with Haney that he would pay $500,000 for every pound over the limit should he miss weight. Garcia later weighed in at 143.2lbs, 3.2lbs over the mark.

However, Garcia also had another bet in play, an astonishing $2 million on himself before the fight. A recent Instagram post from the boxer confirmed the rumors, but a betting slip was never shared. 

“If you bet, BET ON YOURSELF,” he wrote in the caption. “On top of what we made. EATING GOOD.”

For betting $2 million on himself to win, Garcia ended up winning $12 million. He won the bout via majority decision. Garcia knocked down the lightweight champion in rounds 7, 10, and 11 before coming away with the victory.

Was Garcia aiming to lower his own odds of winning?  

Garcia entered the fight as the underdog, a status he received for being three pounds overweight, drinking beer every night before the match, and for comments made during recent interviews. 

Perhaps his behavior was all an act to make bank. 

In an interview with ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, Haney called Garcia a “f—king clown,” and he seemed too overconfident leading up to the fight. 

“We’re here now. That’s all that matters,” he said. “The stuff he’s doing is not normal. It’s obvious that something is wrong with him. But what he does outside the ring does not matter. It won’t change what I’m going to do to him inside the ring.”

In his victory, Garcia landed more than twice as many power punches (95) as Haney (45), according to CompuBox.

Garcia challenged Gervonta “Tank” Davis on Tuesday for a fight at the 144-pound limit

After his big win, Garcia is now setting his sights on another interesting challenge. He called out Gervonta “Tank” Davis on Tuesday and said he’s prepared to fight at the 144-pound limit. 

“Everyone wanna talk about the little Stupid tank. Let’s fight nuff of that funny talk. Come see me at 144 and let stop the talk. If you beat Frank, let’s run it @Gervontaa,” Garcia posted on X.  

Davis, who’s undefeated with 27 knockouts in 29 professional fights, fights Frank Martin on June 15 in Las Vegas.
