Bet365 Gold Cup Trends

Ahead of Saturday’s big Sandown Park race, we highlight the best 2025 bet365 Gold Cup trends and stats that you can apply to the final runners – including a huge favourites stat you can’t ignore.

Just ONE Outright Winning bet365 Gold Cup Favourite Since 1991

The older horse racing fans out there might still refer to this weekend’s bet365 Gold Cup as ‘The Whitbread’, who sponsored the race between 1957 and 2001.

However, the sponsorship mantle is now with bet365, who have certainly made the race their own since taking over in 2008 after Betfred and AtTheRaces had backed the race in the six years prior.

Over this time there have been plenty of decent bet365 Gold Cup trends that have built up too – none more so than the huge favourites stat that’s only seen one outright market leader win the race since Mr Frisk in 1990.

This winning jolly was the former Scottish Grand National winner Kitty’s Light, who broke that long run in 2023 when rewarding favourite backers at 11/4.

Yes, since 1990, we’ve seen a joint favourite winner (Docklands Express, 1991) and Beau, 2000) – but the stats still tell us there’s been ONLY ONE outright winning market leader in the bet365 Gold Cup since the former Grand National winner Mr Frisk in 1990.

Therefore, it’s certainly been a good race for the best horse racing betting sites in the UK in recent times – with this year’s favourite looking likely to be one of the many Willie Mullins bet365 Gold Cup runners – High Class Hero.

Can he kick this dreaded stat into touch?

The Average Winning SP Since 2003 Still Only 13/1

However, despite the poor favourites record – the bet365 Gold Cup trends still tell us that 15 of the last 21 winners returned 14/1 or shorter and 62% hailed from the top seven in the betting.

Suggesting you still don’t need to look far down the market to find the winner – five of the last six winners returned 12/1 or less.

While the average winning SP since 2003 has been 13/1, with last year’s winner Minella Cocooner returning 17/2.

81% Of The Last 21 bet365 Gold Cup Winners Aged Between 7-9

Another key bet365 Gold Cup trend to have up your sleeve is the age.

This is because a massive 17 of the last 21 winners were aged between 7-9 – backed up again 12 months ago when the 8 year-old Minella Cocooner won.

In fact, ALL of the last 11 winners have ticked this stat – with the last horse NOT aged 7,8 or 9 to win the bet365 Gold Cup being the 11 year-old Tidal Bay in 2012.

Minella Cocooner, who was last seen running a fine 7th in the Aintree Grand National, could be back again.

He’ll be looking to become the first ‘back-to-back’ winner since Topsham Bay in 1992/93.

Trainer Paul Nicholls Has Won The bet365 Gold Cup Four Times

Paul Nicholls
Paul Nicholls Has Won The bet365 Gold Cup Four Times

Trainer Fulke Walwyn is the winning-most bet365 Gold Cup trainer with seven successes in the race between 1958 and 1984.

However, of the current stables it’s the Paul Nicholls yard that has the best record with four wins.

The first came in 2001 with Ad Hoc, who followed up again two years later in 2003 – ridden both times by Ruby Walsh.

Nicholls then had to wait till 2012 when the old boy Tidal Bay turned back the clock to win aged 11, with Daryl Jacob doing the steering.

Then his most recent win came in 2015 with Just A Par – ridden by the jockey-of-the-moment Sean Bowen (more on him below).

Paul Nicholls will run Threeunderthrufive this year, who will be ridden by Harry Cobden and looking for his first win in the race.

Another yard to note is Alan King has won two of the last five runnings. But he doesn’t have a runner this year.

While Willie Mullins, who will be mobbed-handed (10 runners) as he tries to win the British jumps trainers’ championship and the £98k on offer to the winner, won the race for the first time last year in 2024.

The good news for his backers is that Sean Bowen is building up a nice record in the Sandown race with two wins.
