Willie Mullins Won £800,000 With The First Three Home In The 2025 Grand National

2025 British Jumps Trainers' Championship - Willie Mullins Edges Dan Skelton On Final Day At Sandown

Before the 2025 Aintree Grand National Festival, top Irish trainer Willie Mullins trailed Dan Skelton by £1.3m in prize money.

However, after firing in four Grade One winners on day one, another on day two – plus the Topham Handicap Chase – he was heading into National day with a clear sight of Skelton.

The bad news for Skelton is that he also didn’t have a runner in the 2025 Grand National – but Mullins had an army.

Six to be exact.

And the further bad news was – of the Mullins runners – in the National only one horse (Appreciate It) failed to bank any money.

Mullins fired in a remarkable 1-2-3 in the race with Nick Rockett, who was ridden by son Patrick, leading home the Mullins battalion.

In fact, in addition to his first three home, Mullins also had the 5th (Meetingofthewaters) and 7th (Minella Cocooner).

In total the five horses won him £860,000 in the race.

All this meant he closed the gap on Dan Skelton on the 2025 British Jumps Trainers’ Title race is just over £100k – with still three weeks to go.

  • 1st – Nick Rockett – £500,000
  • 2nd – I Am Maximus – £200,000
  • 3rd – Grangeclare West – £100,000

Mullins Closes The Gap After Remarkable 1-2 In The Scottish Grand National

It was more of the same for Willie Mullins in the UK Nationals – as fresh off the back of his 1-2-3 in the Aintree National, the Closutton handler fired in a 1-2 in the Scottish version on Saturday.

However, it wasn’t son Patrick this time that rode his winner – it was stand-in jockey Harry Cobden, who is more famed for steering home Paul Nicholls horses, that guided home his Captain Cody (watch below) to land the Scottish Grand National.

The winner scooped the £112,540 first prize, but with stablemate Klarc Kent taking second (£42,400) – this one-two in the race meant Mullins closed the gap on Dan Skelton to next to nothing.

Key British Jumps Trainers’ Races Left And Prize Money

We can expect more Willie Mullins horses in the UK this week – even at the lesser midweek meetings as this title race could go down to the wire so every penny will count.

Dan Skelton will, of course, be ramping up his runners too, but the best horse racing betting sites in the UK now make Mullins odds-on to win the title he famously claimed last season.

The worrying thing for Skelton is that after his 2025 Grand National heroics – history looks to be repeating itself as Mullins also won that race last term before adding the Scottish Grand National and then the bet365 Gold Cup.

Mullins will be hoping for more of the same – Skelton won’t.

We can expect Mullins to apply the ‘scatter-gun’ approach in the coming weeks with multiple entries in the best races, hoping safety in numbers prevails again.

As we enter the final week – Skelton is hanging in there though so it could all go down to the final day at Sandown on Saturday 26th April.

  • Saturday 26th April: bet365 Gold Cup – £98,472.00
  • Saturday 26th April: bet365 Celebration Chase – £99,662.00
