Cristiano Ronaldo

Determined to preserve their 100% record in FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal host the Republic of Ireland at Estadio Jose Alvalade on Saturday night.

Ireland, on the other hand, are looking for their first win in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With just one point to their name, they sit in fourth place in Group F after two matches.

Perfect Portugal Host Desperate Ireland in Third World Cup Qualifier

In June, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal beat Spain in a nail-biting UEFA Nations League final, becoming the first team to win the competition twice.

Roberto Martinez’s side carried their impressive form over to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, kicking off their campaign with a mega 5-0 win in Armenia. The ageless Ronaldo scored a brace — netting on either end of the half time — to continue his march towards another coveted milestone.

After signing a two-year contract extension with Al-Nassr in June, Ronaldo expressed his desire to score 1000 career goals.

By setting another ambitious personal goal – many football fans are wondering when Cristiano Ronaldo will retire.

Ronaldo added to his almost 950-strong senior goal tally against Hungary, helping Portugal to a hard-fought 3-2 victory. Considering Portugal face an out-of-sorts Ireland this weekend, Ronaldo is likely to inch closer to his dream number.

Ireland are without a win in their last four matches in all competitions (D 3, L 1). They started their World Cup qualifying journey with a 2-2 draw at home with Hungary.

After conceding two goals in the first 15 minutes, Ireland dug deep and scored two second-half goals to salvage a point.

On Matchday 2, Ireland suffered a 2-1 away defeat to Armenia. Evan Ferguson made it 2-1 in the 57th minute, sparking hopes of a comeback, but it ultimately did not materialise.

Ireland desperately need a positive result on Matchday 3 to stay in the fight for World Cup qualification. It will be interesting to see how they approach the game against one of the best teams in the world.

Portugal vs Republic of Ireland Betting Tips

  • Portugal to Win – 1/6
  • Cristiano Ronaldo to Score – 8/13
  • Both Teams to Score: Yes – 31/20

Portugal to Win

Roberto Martinez’s Portugal have been in rapid form lately, going unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions (W 4, D 1). En route, they have scored 17 goals and conceded seven goals.

Portugal also have an excellent track record against Ireland. In their 16 past meetings, Portugal have beaten the Boys in Green on nine occasions.

Ireland have won four times while three games have ended all square. Coming to recent fixtures, Selecao das Quinas have beaten Ireland in three of their last four meetings (D 1).

Cristiano Ronaldo to Score

At 946 senior career goals, Cristiano Ronaldo is the all-time leading scorer in men’s football. Ronaldo has scored four goals in his past for matches for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League.

The former Real Madrid man has been in even better form for Portugal. The 40-year-old has scored five goals in his last four matches, with him netting six times in as many matches in 2025.

Ronaldo has been razor sharp in front of goal in the last few months, and we believe he will get plenty of joy against Ireland on Saturday.

Both Teams to Score

Although Portugal are the overwhelming favourites going into this World Cup qualifier, we do not foresee them keeping a clean sheet.

Roberto Martinez’s men have conceded at least one goal in seven of their last eight matches. Against Hungary, they conceded twice, highlighting their defensive vulnerabilities.

Ireland, meanwhile, have only failed to score in one of their last six matches. Stats suggest both goalkeepers could be busy on Saturday.
