The Grand Slam of Darts is arguably the third biggest major in the calendar, with Luke Littler chasing back-to-back titles in Wolverhampton this year.
Littler is on the brink of making Grand Slam of Darts history with a feat only achieved by Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price.
Luke Littler Aims To Make Grand Slam Of Darts History With B2B Title
This year at the Grand Slam of Darts, Luke Littler has the opportunity to become just the fourth back-to-back winner of the prestigious Eric Bristow Trophy.
The 18-year-old darting phenom has already won seven majors in his career as well as the Premier League, with just three more of the recognised PDC major titles left until he has completed the darting career Grand Slam.
‘The Nuke’ won the Grand Slam on debut 12 months ago, defeating Martin Lukeman 16-3 in the final whilst averaging 107.08 in the process. A truly ridiculous standard of darts that almost nobody is capable of competing with.
Littler is all about making history as well as pocketing as much cash as he can, so winning back-to-back Grand Slam of Darts titles and earning £150,000 in the process is something that massively appeals to the Englishman.
Littler raged at Players Championship officials last week after missing the registration deadline due to traffic on the motorway, but has since passed his driving test and may even drive himself to Wolverhampton come Saturday if he fancies it!
All eyes are on Luke Littler at the 2025 Grand Slam of Darts at the WV Active Aldersley in Wolverhampton to see if he can follow in the footsteps of Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price in becoming the fourth back-to-back Grand Slam of Darts winner.
How Many Grand Slam Of Darts Back-To-Back Winners Have There Been?
Since its inception in 2007, there have only ever been three back-to-back Grand Slam of Darts winners in history.
The first player to achieve the feat was 16-time world champion Phil Taylor, who won back-to-back Grand Slam of Darts titles on two separate occasions.
‘The Power’ won the first three Grand Slam of Darts tournaments in a row from 2007-2009, before going back-to-back once again in 2013 and 2014.
Michael van Gerwen became the second player in history to win back-to-back Grand Slam titles, actually winning three in a row from 2015-2017.
The Dutchman’s run was ended in 2018 by Gerwyn Price, who turned out to be the next back-to-back Grand Slam of Darts champion. The Welshman won his first title in 2018, before adding another 12 months later in 2019.
Since then, there hasn’t been another player to win back-to-back Grand Slam titles and reign in Wolverhampton for consecutive years.
This year, Luke Littler heads the Grand Slam of Darts field and has the chance to become just the fourth back-to-back winner of the tournament in history, adding his name to the illustrious list of former consecutive champions.
Gerwyn Price Was The Last Back-To-Back Grand Slam Of Darts Winner
The last darts player to win back-to-back Grand Slam of Darts titles was of course Gerwyn Price.
‘The Iceman’ won his first ever PDC major in 2018 at the Grand Slam, before successfully defending his crown 12 months later to win the third most prestigious PDC major title two years on the trot.
Both of Price’s triumphs came against Scotsmen too. The Welshman’s first title in 2018 came courtesy of a 16-13 victory over Gary Anderson in a match that has gone down in history as one of the most feisty professional darts encounters of all time.
The following year, Price defeated Peter Wright 16-6 in the final, averaging 107.86 in the process and claiming the coveted Eric Bristow Trophy for the second time in as many years.
Having triumphed 12 months ago at the 2024 Grand Slam, reigning world champion Luke Littler aims to become just the fourth back-to-back Grand Slam of Darts champion in history.
Last year ‘The Nuke’ recorded the second largest margin of victory in Grand Slam history with a 16-3 win over Martin Lukeman in Wolverhampton, and will be hoping to follow that up this year with another title.
That being said, Price will be there or thereabouts and will fancy his chances at winning a fourth Eric Bristow Trophy come Sunday, November 16.
Price issued a fresh injury update recently after fellow players and fans voiced concern over his physique, but ‘The Iceman’ is raring to go and insists he is fitter than ever right now.
