Becher Chase Trends Point To Course Favourites

This Saturday’s big Aintree card was lost last season to the weather but things are looking okay for this year. Which is great news as there are plenty of Becher Chase trends and stats to get stuck into when trying to unravel this popular race, which is staged over the unique Grand National fences.

These stats are also pointing heavily towards TWO horses that has run well over these National obstacles in the past.

That will also be in with a chance of winning the £500k Becher Chase/Grand National bonus – if they win both races this season.

Course Lover Gaboriot Ticks Many Becher Chase Trends and Stats

The Dan Skelton yard can seemingly do little wrong these days – especially on Saturday’s having won the Betfair Chase and Coral Gold Cup recently.

They are well clear in the 2025/26 British Trainers’ Championship and also won the Becher Chase in 2022 with Ashtown Lad.

Therefore, their Galia Des Liteaux has to be on the shortlist.

The David Pipe and Venetia Williams camps also have good recent records in this race, with three wins between them since 2016.

Pipe runs his 2024 Becher Chase winner King Turgeon, while Williams has Tanganyika.

However, the Becher Chase trends are pointing towards a horse that has plenty of experience over these National fences.

Step forward GABORIOT.

SIX Becher Chase Stats In Gaboriot’s Corner 📈

AGE CONCERN: 20/22 Aged Eight Or Older

With 20 of the last 22 Becher Chase winners aged eight+ (91%), this is the first tick for the nine year-old Gaboriot.

Meaning we can rule out those aged seven or younger – with the only one winner aged seven since 2005 (Vieux Lion Rouge, 2020).

Nine year-olds also have the best recent record in the race – winning seven of the last 16 renewals (44%) of this ITV Racing contest.

TRIP ADVISOR: 18/22 (82%) – Won Over 3m+

The next of our Becher Chase trends in Gaboriot’s favour is winning form over three+ miles.

Okay, most will fit the bill here, but this Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero runner won’t have any issues staying the Becher Chase 3m 2f trip.

He’s won over 3m 1 1/2f at Cartmel in the past and even over 4m 1/2f at Cheltenham.

With the ground also likely to be ‘soft’ on Saturday, this is again no problem.

Gaboriot’s last three wins all came on ‘soft’ ground.

FRESH AS A DAISY: 18/22 (82%) – Had Just One Start That Season

We can further rule out of some of the Becher Chase runners with this stat that tells us 82% of the last 22 winners had only one start that season.

Gaboriot gets a thumbs up here here too – having run last month when runner-up over these fences in the Grand Sefton (watch below).

But it would be a negative for likely favourite Mr Vango, who hasn’t been out for 266 days.

RECENT RUN: 17/22 (77%) – Raced In The Last Seven Weeks

So we know having one run this season to blow away the cobwebs is a plus,

But we can also tell you if this run came in the last seven weeks – even better.

This Becher Chase trend has produced 17 of the last 22 winners.

And with Gaboriot last in action 28 days ago (8th Nov), he’s okay here.

But this is again another negative for top-weight Mr Vango.

WEIGHT WATCHERS: 17/22 (77%) – Carried 10st 12lbs or Less

Being a handicap, then weight carried in the past has also been a good pointer to finding the Becher Chase winner.

As 77% of the last 22 winners carried just 10st 12lbs – so with Gaboriot getting in with a featherweight of 10st 1lbs this helps.

In short, since 2008 only two winners have carried 11st 5lbs or more.

You guessed it – yet another Becher Chase trend against lat year’s Midland Grand National winner Mr Vango, who will have 12st if running.

EXPERIENCE COUNTS: 14/22 (64%) – Had Run Over The National Fences Before

The final Becher Chase stat in Gaboriot’s corner is experience over the National fences.

This race tends to go to a horse that has tasted these unique obstacles in the past.

Backed up with 14 of the last 22 winners (64%) running over them before.

Yes, Gaboriot is yet to actually win over these fences and he even unseated in the 2024 Foxhunters’ Chase at the Grand National Meeting.

But since then has run third in the 2024 Grand Sefton and took silver in the same race just last month.

Life’s A Becher: GG’s Look Cracking Each-Way Value

Therefore, with these SIX Becher Chase trends all in favour of GABORIOT, this nine year-old looks decent each-way value.

He’s up just a pound from his recent second in the Grand Sefton here.

But is still two pounds lower than running third in that same race in 2024.

If Mr Vango goes, then he’ll get in with a low weight (10st 2lbs) – running a pound out of the handicap.

While the longer trip (3m 2f) of Saturday’s Becher Chase also looks in his favour, having run on well the last day over 2m 5f.

The other of interest is the Dan Skelton-trained GALIA DES LITEAUX, who was 8th in the Grand National over these fences in April 2024.

She’sm, however, back reported to be in fine form by his trainer and is also rated 15lbs lower (than that National run) if you include Tristan Durrell’s 3lb claim.

This nine year-old also ticks many of the Becher Chase trends and stat – including having a recent run, weight (10st 10lbs) and age (9).
