Kylian Mbappe Closing In On Cristiano Ronaldo Record

Cristiano Ronaldo looks set to lose one of his Real Madrid records to Kylian Mbappe.

CR7 currently holds the record for the most goals in a single calendar year by a Los Blancos player. Incredibly, Mbappe is closing in on breaking the record in his first full year at the club.

Ronaldo’s best yearly tally in the Spanish capital came in 2013 when he netted 59 goals, while his 58-goal season in 2012 and his 56-goal season in 2014 follow in second and third.

Mbappe though, is currently on 55 goals, currently fourth in the all-time rankings for the most goals by a Real Madrid player in a calendar year, and we’ve only just entered December.

His brace in the 3-0 win over Athletic Club on Wednesday has him within touching distance of Ronaldo’s record, now only four goals away from matching the Portuguese’s best tally.

Easier said than done, the 26-year-old has five games remaining in 2025 to achieve the feat.

First up, he faces a home clash against Celta Vigo in LaLiga on Sunday before a tough Champions League encounter with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City next Wednesday.

Mbappe scored a hat-trick in his last appearance against City, so if he’s able to repeat such heroics, he’ll likely surpass Ronaldo’s record, potentially by a healthy margin.

Following their continental clash, Los Blancos round off the year against bottom-half duo Alaves and Sevilla in the Spanish top-flight, with Mbappe undoubtedly among the most likely scorers.

In between the aforementioned LaLiga fixtures, France’s all-time top goalscorer and his Real Madrid teammates play in the Copa del Rey third round. Their opponent is currently unknown.

As for this season, Mbappe leads the way in Spain as the league’s top scorer.

He has netted 16 goals thus far in 2025/26, double that of joint-second-place trio Robert Lewandowski, Ferran Torres and Vedat Muriqi, who all have eight goals apiece in the division.

If he’s able to carry this form into 2026, he should have a strong chance of winning a maiden Ballon d’Or. Mbappe is currently the outright favourite in the Ballon d’Or winner betting odds.

Whether the prolific Frenchman is able to surpass or even match Ronaldo’s five Ballon d’Or triumphs come the end of his career is an entirely different story, however.
