Sportscasting’s horse racing expert Andy Newton continues with his hot trends and 1-2-3 picks ahead of the ITV Racing from Doncaster and Kempton this Saturday (29th March) – which marks the opening day of the new flat turf season.

ITV4 Racing Cameras Head To Doncaster and Kempton This Saturday

Despite the Aintree Grand National Festival on the horizon next Saturday, it’s horse racing flat action all the way this Saturday on ITV – with fixtures at Doncaster and Kempton.

Doncaster hosts the Lincoln Handicap – the traditional turf flat season curtain raiser – where trainer William Haggas will be looking to win the race for a fifth time. The ITV Racing team are there to take in five races live.

Then at Kempton on the AW, there are three more LIVE ITV4 races – that include the Snowdrop Fillies’ Stakes, which sees the return of the useful Soprano for trainer George Boughey.

While the Hannon yard are going well at the moment and won this in 2022, so their Norman’s Cay is sure to be popular too. Of the rest, The Boreham Bullet is the value call from the Bill Turner yard, who has six past wins in the race.

LOOK BACK SMILING won this race last year and is back on a pound lower mark. In-form Brandon Wilkie rides again and can claim 5lbs too like last year, so another big run looks on the cards.

We’ve also got last year’s third and 2022 winner Arthur’s Realm in the race and this Ed Dunlop runner will be fitter for a recent run at Wolverhampton. While the yard also run Pressure’s On, who can go well with jockey Rossa Ryan picking him over Arthur’s Realm.

This can go to JAMES’S DELIGHT, who heads here having won five of his 12 starts and was last seen running an excellent race in the G1 Champions Sprint Stakes – beaten just 4 1/2 lengths – so this ease back into Listed level will be much easier.

He’s also won first time out for the last two seasons. Last year’s second Marshman can go well too – but the niggle with the Karl Burke yard is they are only 1-39 with their 4+ year-olds at the track. The only course winner in the field Iberian is next best.

The Hannon yard are going well so despite having a bit to find on these terms Witch Hunter is shortlisted – being fit from the AW. Derby 6th Dancing Gemini could also have a big season and will be more at home in this grade.

But the call is BOTANICAL, who is back from a wind operation, stays further than this 1m trip and represents the George Boughey team, who have been amongst the winners of late.

Trainer William Haggas has a top record in the Lincoln – winning the race four times and needs just one more to be the leading handler in this own right. He’s got GODWINSON here, who went well first time out last season and had excuses the last twice on soft ground.

The Lincoln Handicap trends suggest draw 9+ are favoured over the last 20 years, but two of the last three winners came from stalls 4 or lower so Godwinson’s 3 berth could be okay. Lattam was second last year and is only 2lbs higher.

While Old Cock has sneaked in at the bottom of the weights and with just six career runs looks the sort who can have more to offer.

Kamboo was 11th in the Derby and on that form will be hard to beat. He’s since on on the AW at Newcastle and had Who’s Glen back in 4th – so meeting that horse on 11lbs better terms gives this Richard Hughes horse a big chance.

However, he lost his way after and has been gelded and had a wind op as a result. The step up in trip to 2m is also an known, so a chance is taken on WHO’S GLEN reversing the form for the in-form Andrew Balding yard. He’s won over 1m6f but has also looked as if the step up to 2m will suit.

Trainer Andrew Balding is going well at present and runs three here – Mount Atlas, Lieber Power and TEUMESSIAS FOX – but with Oisin Murphy picking the last-named he’s the call.

His last win came here at Kempton in Jan 24 and is only rated a pound higher, while his AW record is much better than his turf form – with 3 wins from 8 starts.

Paradias for Alan King can go well too, while last year’s second Killybegs Warrior is back off a 11lbs lower back and could outrun his odds based on that run. He’s also now with George Baker – the yard who won this race 12 months ago.

With question marks over most of these the safe call is to side with the George Boughey runner SOPRANO, who had a top season last year. These runs included a third to Porta Fortuna in the G1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown and was far from disgraced at the Breeders’ Cup after a slow start over a new trip.

Shuwari would be very interesting if make to the level that saw her run second in the 2023 Fillies’ Mile – but that was 533 days ago and has clearly had some issues since. Crimson Advodate is up to 1m here – having been running over 5f last season – including winning the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot – so the trip is the big unknown.
