Benfica have booked their place in the Champions League last 16 after a dramatic 3-3 draw with Monaco in Tuesday night’s playoff second leg, securing a 4-3 win on aggregate.
The match was a rollercoaster from start to finish at the Estádio da Luz.
Benfica struck first in the opening half, with Kerem Akturkoglu finishing from close range after excellent work by Vangelis Pavlidis.
Monaco responded quickly, with Takumi Minamino levelling the score to keep the tie on a knife’s edge.
The French side continued to threaten, as Eliesse Ben Seghir and Breel Embolo both struck the post. Embolo then squandered a golden opportunity from close range just before halftime.
Monaco’s persistence paid off in the second half when Ben Seghir fired them into the lead, momentarily putting them ahead in the tie.
But Benfica quickly hit back, with Pavlidis converting a penalty to level the score once again.
As the game entered the final 10 minutes, substitute George Ilenikhena looked to have won it for Monaco, restoring their lead with a well-taken finish.
Extra time seemed inevitable, but just three minutes later, Orkun Kokcu applied the decisive touch, turning in Álvaro Carreras’ teasing cross to send Benfica through and break Monaco hearts.
