Marc Guehi

On deadline day, Crystal Palace has a big decision to make about the future of star defender and captain Marc Guehi.

Guehi has been linked with a move to Liverpool since the start of the summer transfer window.

The English defender reportedly wants to take the next step in his career by joining the Reds.

Guehi and Palace have until 7 PM BST on Monday, September 1, to find a solution. The defender is 4/9 with UK betting sites to join Liverpool before the window closes tonight.

Oliver Glasner Wants Palace to Hold on to Guehi

Crystal Palace secured a 3-0 win over Aston Villa in their Premier League meeting at Villa Park on Sunday. Marc Guehi scored in the 68th minute after Jean-Philippe Mateta fired Palace into the lead from the penalty spot. Ismaila Sarr scored the final goal of the game in the 78th minute.

After the game, Palace boss Oliver Glasner discussed Guehi’s future at the club. The coach was adamant that losing the captain could derail their campaign.

He said:

For playing a successful season we need Marc. It is not possible with one day left to find a replacement who can play in the Premier League. You’ve seen out defensive setup, I have spoken about it quite often, this is our foundation and everyone knows exactly what he has to do.

Everyone can rely on each other and Marc, of course, is not just a small part of the puzzle, he is our captain, so we have to keep him. I told this to the chairman and again it’s not for me. It’s nice because I like Marc, he is such a professional and such a nice guy, but it’s for the future of Crystal Palace and playing a successful season, so we have to keep him.

Guehi to Liverpool a Possibility Due to Contract Length

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has no intention of selling Marc Guehi this summer. However, the Palace hierarchy are not in 100% agreement.

Guehi sees his contract expire on June 30, 2026. Glasner wants to keep Guehi for the remainder of his contract, not only to save Palace’s season but also to try and convince him to continue.

The higher-ups, meanwhile, are leaning more towards finalising a deal for him before the end of the transfer window. They want £40 million for the centre-back, but Liverpool, who are set to make Alexander Isak the most expensive deadline day signing, have yet to agree to it.

According to the BBC, the Merseysiders tabled an improved offer for Guehi over the weekend. They are prepared to pay £35 million up-front and a 10% sell-0n fee.

Palace have yet to accept the deal, but journalist Ben Jacobs believes the transfer remains a real possibility. Another improvement from Liverpool — possibly in the form a swap deal involving Joe Gomez — on deadline day could compel Palace to accept.

Guehi joined Crystal Palace from Chelsea in July 2021. The 25-year-old has played 161 games for Palace, scoring nine goals.
