96% Of The Last 23 Ebor Winners Aged 6 Or Younger – Which Is Against The 8 Year-old Favourite
The Willie Mullins-trained Hipop De Loire has been very popular in the betting for the Ebor Handicap all week – but there is a huge age trend against this 8 year-old.
A massive 22 of the last 23 (96%) winners of this valuable handicap were aged 6 OR YOUNGER.
While over this period – the only older winner was the 7 year-old Litigant in 2015.
In short, if you go back to 1960 – you’ll see all barring one winner aged 6 or younger.
Backed up with the last nine winners all aged 4, 5 0r 6.
As well as this being against the Hipop De Loire, who was fifth in the race last year – it’s also a negative got other older runners in the race – Kihavah (8), Enemy (8) and Onesmoothoperator (7).
In the last five years, there have been 18 horses aged 7+ to run – they’ve ALL lost.
Ebor Handicap Favourites Have A Poor Record, Despite One Winning Last Year
12 months ago, Magical Zoe rewarded favourite backers at 11/2.
While in 2020 Fujaira Prince we also won at the same price as the market leader.
But if we go back to 1999, we’ve seen just THREE winning favourites of the Ebor.
Therefore, this is another key trend against likely jolly Hipop De Loire.
ALL Of The Last 13 Ebor Winners Carried 9-0 to 9-9 In Weight
Being a handicap, then next up is to look at the Ebor Handicap weight – with the best range between 9st and 9st 9lbs.
As ALL of the last 13 winners fell into this weight bracket and ALL of the last seven winners had between 9st 3lbs and 9st 9lbs.
Last year’s winner Magical Zoe carried 9st 6lbs, while the last time a winner carried less than 9st was Moyenne Corniche in 2011.
At the other end of the weight spectrum, the last horse to win with more than 9st 9st – was the mighty Sea Pigeon, when he flew home in 1979.
This could be yet another key stat against the Mullins runner Hipop De Loire, who has 9st 10lbs to carry.
While French Master also have a big weight (9-12).
Respect Horses Drawn In A Double-Figure Stall
Now, with 22 runners – then, of course, the Ebor is going to have more horses each year from a double-figure stall.
But it’s still worth noting that seven of the last nine winners came from stalls 12+.
Yes, last year’s winner Magical Zoe defied this from stall 1, but before that win we saw horses from 24, 20, 14, 12, 21, 18 and 15 win since 2016.
These are the horses drawn in single-figures.
- Onesmoothoperator (1)
- Almosh’her (2)
- Yashin (3)
- Queenstown (5)
- Enemy (6)
- Kihavah (7)
- Shadow Dance (8)
- Hipop De Loire (9)
Look Out For Recent Runs at Galway, Goodwood and Ascot
Next up it to take a quick look back at recent runs – but, don’t worry, we’ll do this for you.
This because 15 of the last 23 winners raced at Ascot, Galway or Goodwood in their most recent runs.
Those that fit the bill here are – French Master, Hipop De Loire, Ethical Diamond, Subsequent, Stressfree, Shadow Dance, Enemy, Ascending, Almosh’her, Charlus, Mr Percy.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien Has Won The Ebor Handicap Just Once

Top Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien team has only won the once – and that came way back in 2001 with a horse called Mediterranean.
Last year they had the well-fancied Queenstown, who was only 17th and runs again in 2025. Ryan Moore rides.
This year O’Brien will also be trying to add to his sole win with London City, with Sean Levey getting the leg-up.
In contrast, the John Gosden yard have won the Ebor twice since 2018 and run French Master.
Willie Mullins has two wins since 2009 and tries again with Hipop De Loire and Ethical Diamond.
Johnny Murtagh has two wins in the last 11 too – Sonnyboyliston (2021) and Mutual Regard (2014) – he runs Siege Of Troy.
While last year’s winning yard of Henry de Bromhead look to follow up – this time with Ascending.
The Irish Have A Top Ebor Record In Recent Years
Despite top Irish handler Aidan O’Brien having just one Ebor to his name, this fellow countryman has still been flying the flag with a top record in this York race.
The prize has gone back across the Irish Sea eight times in the last 16 years, including for the last two runnings with Absurde and Magical Zoe winning.
This year’s Irish-trained horses are here.
- Queenstown (O’Brien)
- Hipop De Loire (Mullins)
- Ethical Diamond (Mullins)
- London City (O’Brien)
- Ascending (De Bromhead)
- Aeronautic (Joseph O’Brien) (Reserve)
- Siege Of Troy (Murtagh)
- Samui (Elliott)
- Fleetfoot (Bolger)
- Charlus (Mulins)
- Mr Percy (Joseph O’Brien)
Ebor Handicap Trends Tip
The Ebor Handicap trends suggest that the Willie Mullins likely favourite Hipop De Loire has a lot to overcome.
Firstly, despite two in the last five runnings – we’ve only seen three winning favourites since 1999 –
While the last horse to win with more than 9st 9lb was Sea Pigeon in 1979 – Hipop has 9st 10lbs.
Next is the age. As this race has been dominated by horses aged 6 or younger – we’ve only seen one winner aged 7 since 1960 – so at 8 this is another stat against Hipop.
In the last five runnings there have been 18 horses aged 7+ – they’ve all lost.
And finally – the horse has been handed draw 9, seven of the last nine came from 12+.
In short, with many key stats to overcome, even though he won well over hurdles at Galway last time – Hipop De Loire looks no value to me.
Ireland Have Half The 2025 Ebor Field
The Irish have a good record though and look to saddle half the 22 runners.
One of those is Ascending from last year’s winning yard of Henry de Bromhead.
Having won over trips from 1m4f to 2m4f is a versatile sort and has Seamie Heffernan riding and they look to have a great chance of trying to add to Magical Zoe’s win from last year.
But SIEGE OF TROY is another Irish runner though that catches the eye.
From the Johnny Murtagh yard that won this in 2021, he was a fair 4th to Ethical Diamond at Royal Ascot in June (watch below).
He’s back on 8lbs better terms though and connections have also booked 7lb claimer Patrick McGettigan, who has ridden 14 winners from 131 rides in Ireland.
The horse has since run third in a G3 in Ireland but is back in a handicap off a mark of 99 (the same as Ascot) – but really meeting Ethical Diamond on 15lbs better terms.
