Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has died following a tragic car crash in Spain.

According to the Spanish and Portuguese media, the accident occurred near the Zamora region, at kilometre 65 of the A-52.

Jota, 28, was travelling with his brother Andre, a 26-year-old footballer from Penafiel. Their car went off the road, causing a fire, killing both.

Emergency services in the region confirmed Jota’s accident.

The statement read (via The Daily Mail):

“A car was reported to have been involved in an accident, and the vehicle was on fire. 1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Centre (CCU) of this accident.

“From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Centre were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene.”

Diogo Jota, who married his long-term girlfriend Rute Cardoso just a couple of weeks ago, was a beloved figure in the football fraternity. News of his tragic passing has shaken fans, who have been paying their respects on social media.

Speaking on SkySports, his statement captured the shock of it all.

“I was driving to work today when I saw his name pop up in our group chat. I thought maybe it was about a transfer or something like that. Then I read the message and thought, ‘Oh no, I love Diogo Jota, I hope it’s not true.’
