Liverpool Forward Diogo Jota Dies In Car Accident Aged 28

Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has died in a car accident in Spain, aged 28.

Liverpool’s Diogo Jota Dies In Car Accident

Diogo Jota has died after being involved in a car crash in Spain.

The accident occurred at kilometre 65 of the A-52 near the Zamora region of Sanabria early on Thursday morning.

It is reported that the car veered off the road, causing a fire. A witness confirmed that the car was engulfed in flames, which then spread to nearby vegetation.

Jota’s brother, Andre – also a professional footballer for F.C. Penafiel in the Portuguese second tier – passed away in the crash too, aged just 26-years-old.

Local police confirmed the tragic incident in a statement.

“We can now bring you the full statement from the Guardia Civil, given verbally, confirming the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Felipe.

“The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking.

“It was in the early hours, 12.30am, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora. The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed.”

A statement from the emergency services in the region read: “The 1-1-2 Castilla y LeĂłn operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora.

“A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire.

“1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident.

“From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene.”

The tragic news comes less than two weeks after Jota married his long-term girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, in Porto. They had three children together.

Liverpool ‘Devastated’ By Jota’s Tragic Passing

The Reds published a brief statement on their website, confirming Jota’s passing.

“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 for an initial ÂŁ41m fee.

During his five years at Anfield, he won one Premier League title, one FA Cup, one Carabao Cup and picked up a Champions League runners-up medal.

He made a total of 182 appearances and scored 65 goals for the club.

Portuguese Football Federation Statement

The Portuguese Football Federation also confirmed the sad news in a statement on Thursday.

It read: “The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother AndrĂ© Silva, this morning, in Spain.

“Much more than an outstanding player, with nearly 50 caps for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all colleagues and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference in his own community.

“The Portuguese Football Federation expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and AndrĂ© Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players respectively played.

“The Portuguese Football Federation has already requested UEFA to hold a minute of silence, this Thursday, before our National Team’s match against Spain in the Women’s European Championship.

“We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and AndrĂ© Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese Football, and we will do everything to honor their legacy daily.”

Jota made a total of 49 appearances for the Portugal national team, scoring 14 goals.
