Harvey Elliot’s Aston Villa Loan Has Backfired Massively
The situation for Elliott at Villa is more complicated than it first appears.
His move included a £35 million obligation to buy in the summer, with most assuming he would make a permanent switch at the end of the current campaign.
But this week, it emerged that the obligation clause is only triggered once Elliott plays a certain number of games.
As a result, some are suggesting that he has been frozen out of Emery’s squad to avoid hitting that number.
There are even reports that Emery has been left frustrated by the situation.
The Villa boss will no doubt be unimpressed if he has been forced to omit Elliott against his will.
It wouldn’t be the first time Villa have avoided making a loan move permanent, either.

So far this season, Liverpool have shown flashes of the brilliance that won them last season’s title.
But they have also produced some awful displays. Last weekend’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City typified their season, with low energy and a distinct lack of cutting edge.
According to the stats, that defeat means Liverpool’s title defence is already over, barring a miracle.
But while it may be too late to retain the Premier League, Arne Slot’s side have plenty to play for.
And in Elliott, they have a young, hungry midfielder who will be desperate to prove himself.
With quick feet, good movement and relentless energy, Elliott played some great football under former boss Jurgen Klopp.
And his versatility would be particularly useful while Slot figures out how to work his best players into the starting XI.
Should Elliott return, Slot’s biggest challenge will be to quickly reintegrate him after a tough spell at Villa.

With a loan slot freed up, it is likely Unai Emery would seek to bring in a replacement.
Raheem Sterling is one man who could fit that role.
A versatile and experienced winger with proven Premier League quality, Sterling is a strong option.
The former Liverpool and Manchester City man has struggled since leaving the Etihad, with disappointing spells at Arsenal and Chelsea.
Yet to feature for the Blues this season, Villa could be an ideal location for the 30-year-old to reignite his career.
The Midlands outfit has been the destination of choice for out-of-favour England stars in recent years.
Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho have both enjoyed loan moves to Villa Park.
Could Sterling be the next to do the same?
Liverpool were not planning to see Elliott back at Anfield this season.
But the situation at Villa may force their hand, and open the door for Sterling to move as well.
