Manchester United have a battle on their hands are they look to ward off interest in wonderkid JJ Gabriel from Spanish giants Barcelona.

Barca often struggle to keep their top talents at their famous La Masia academy.

But it looks like one starlet may soon be moving in the other direction.

Fifteen-year-old Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel has been attracting a lot of attention.

He signed for United aged 10, and has become a feature of the under-18 side at Carrington.

Gabriel has shown such promise that United boss Rubem Amorim recently invited the youngster to train with the senior squad.

Long regarded as one of the brightest prospects to come through United’s academy in recent years, the England under-16 international is already a familiar name to some.

But his recent scoring exploits for United’s under-18s have attracted major attention.

Gabriel bagged a hat-trick against Liverpool under-18s, and now has ten goals in as many appearances for United’s age-grade side this campaign.

As a result, Barcelona have made signing the prodigal talent one of their top academy targets.

Barcelona Eyeing A Move For Manchester United’s JJ Gabriel

According to reports, Barca are ready to make a compelling offer to both United and Gabriel.

Viewing him as a potential world-class talent of the future, the Catalan club are pulling out all the stops to make a deal happen.

The teenager and his family were recently invited to the Nou Camp, with a tour of the facilites provided in an effort to persuade him towards a move.

Barca’s interest in Gabriel is though to be long-standing. He also met senior players during his visit to the Spanish City, and the club have made clear their intentions to sign him.

Having produced the likes of Lionel Messi, Lamine Yamal and countless others, Barcelona’s La Masia academy is undoubtedly an attractive proposition for any young footballer.

Manchester United Determined To Keep Youngster

However, Manchester United are not willing to lose their young talent without a fight.

They remain confident of keeping Gabriel, and have made a concerted effort to prove it.

Director of Football Jason Wilcox has been pivotal in showing Gabriel and his family how highly the club value him, and how invested they are in his development.

Steps such as inviting the teenager to train with the first team are important in showing Gabriel a clear path to the top level.

The club are showing a desire to bring in and retain younger talents in recent windows.

Reports indicate Manchester United are monitoring Sergej Levak, with the Croatian starlet linked to Old Trafford.

Asked about JJ Gabriel’s involvement with senior training, Ruben Amorim was full of praise.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has been impressed with JJ Gabriel.

He said: “Like everyone, I know he is a really talented guy and everyone paid attention on social media.

“You could see the U21s had a game and we had less players and tried to pick players for training that have talent.

“Not just for me to see for tomorrow but for them to feel what it means to be in the first team, the difficulties playing against our defenders, the difficulty of our training, the pace.

“If we can use every training we have to show the kids what they need to do to be here. It is important, not just for JJ but for everyone.”

Dual Nationality Could Make Barcelona Move Easier For JJ Gabriel

But one factor that may suit Barcelona is Gabriel’s dual nationality.

As the youngster is under 18, he would not usually be able to sign for Barcelona until then.

However, thanks to his father’s Irish heritage, Gabriel holds dual English and Irish nationality.

This makes him eligible for an Irish passport.

Consequently, as an EU citizen, he would theoretically be allowed to join Barca when he turns 16 next October.

United remain keen to keep hold of Gabriel, though.

And thanks to the efforts of Jason Wilcox, he looks to be staying put – in the short-term at least.
