Man City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma Set to Make Unwanted Premier League Record

Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma could become the first goalkeeper in Premier League history to receive a ban for accumulating five yellow cards.

Donnarumma Could Set Unwanted Premier League Record Against Fulham

Manchester City summer signing Gianluigi Donnarumma picked up his fourth yellow card in the 3-2 win over Leeds United on Sunday.

The former PSG goalkeeper was booked in the 87th minute for dissent, after furiously protesting Peter Bankes’ call.

Donnarumma’s disciplinary issues have mostly come from dissent, with three of his four bookings shown for arguing with officials and one for time wasting.

He went into the referee’s book for the same reason in the 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United and the 3-1 victory over Bournemouth.

The Italian will play his 11th Premier League game on Tuesday when Man City travel to Fulham.

If Donnarumma is booked in the upcoming game or the following five, he will become the first Premier League goalkeeper to serve a one-game ban for yellow card accumulation.

So far, only 12 goalkeepers in Premier League history have received five or more yellow cards. However, none of them got five yellow cards in his teams’ first 19 games to warrant the one-game suspension.

Only five Premier League players have seen more yellow cards than Donnarumma this season.

West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta tops the list with five yellows and has already served a one-game ban. Upon his return, Paqueta saw red against Liverpool, getting back-to-back yellows for dissent.

Guardiola Will Not Speak to Donnarumma About His Discipline

Ahead of Tuesday’s game against Fulham at Craven Cottage, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola addressed concerns about Gianluigi Donnarumma’s discipline.

The Spanish coach said he would not speak to Donnarumma about his behaviour, stating the goalkeeper was ‘adult enough’ to avoid the ban.

When asked if he would talk to Donnarumma about his behaviour, Guardiola said:  “No, he is adult enough.

For sure, we will step-by-step understand things in the league and new behaviours.”

Donnarumma may have to face stricter sanctions if he does not work on his behaviour.

As per the rulebook, players have to serve a two-game suspension if they receive 10 or more yellow cards in the first 32 games. Meanwhile, accumulating 15 yellow cards warrants a three-game ban.

Man City have a highly rated replacement in James Trafford, but the Englishman reportedly wants to leave due to a lack of minutes.

Reports suggest Trafford is considering Championship switch to keep his hopes of making the England World Cup squad alive.

Trafford joined Man City from Burnley in the summer window, with hopes of locking down the No.1 spot.

However, the Cityzens disrupted those plans by signing Donnarumma, who has started every Premier League game since moving from PSG.
