There are just SEVEN St Leger runners left at the last declaration stage – and top Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has half of these for Saturday’s final English Classic of the season.
Seven St Leger Runners Remain As Final English Classic Looms
Ahead of the final of the English Classics – there are just SEVEN St Leger runners left in.
Of these entries Aidan O’Brien, who has won the race eight times, is responsible for three.
With, of his trio, the recent Goodwood Cup winner Scandinavia topping the market with the horse racing betting sites.
Prior to that Goodwood win, Scandinavia landed the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket in July and looks another fast-improving stayer for Ballydoyle.
The Scandinavia St Leger betting odds also shorten recently without even running – mainly due to O’Brien’s Derby winner Lambourn losing at York.
O’Brien has won the last two runnings of the St Leger, with Jan Brueghel his most recent.
But his eight overall wins in the race are still way off the record haul of trainer John Scott, who had 16 St Leger winners in the 1800’s.
Epsom Derby Winner Lambourn Still Holds St Leger Entry
O’Brien also has his Epsom Derby winner Lambourn still in the race, but will need to bounce back from a defeat in the Great Voltigeur at the York Ebor Festival recently.
However, since that defeat his trainer has been quick to dismiss that race and the way it was run not suiting Lambourn.
“The Voltigeur was only a sprint down the straight and was a waste of a race. They only hacked and it was just a day at the races.
“It is very possible that Lambourn will still go for the St Leger. He didn’t even blow after the race. We just needed to get a race into him. It was a day out for them, really. We needed to get a run into them all.” Said Aidan O’Brien
O’Brien’s other St Leger runner is close-up Great Voltigeur fourth Stay True.
The only other Irish-trained runner still in the race is the Paddy Twomey-trained Carmers.
This 3 year-old is third best in the market with the best betting sites – having only been a length second at York in the Great Voltigeur last time out.

Only THREE British-Trained St Leger Entries Left For 2025 Renewal
Roger Varian was the last British trainer to win the St Leger (Eldar Eldarov, 2022), but with only THREE possible runners left at the latest declaration stage we might not see another this year.
Varian, who also won the race in 2014 (Kingston Hill), could have another crack though as he’s got one of those left – Rahiebb, who was last seen running fourth in the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
This son of Frankel was left in at the five-day declaration stage.
Tarriance, who is looked after by Andrew Balding, could be another British-trained runner – and looks an improved stayer after winning his last two.
The most recent a hard-fought success at York at their Ebor Festival Meeting in August in the competitive Melrose Handicap (watch below).
While Balding also has recent Newbury scorer Furthur left in.
The big absentee was the Epsom Derby runner-up Lazy Griff, who was taken out of the Doncaster Classic by trainer Charlie Johnston.
