The Open Championship - 153rd Open Championship - Royal Portrush - Golf

When is The Open 2025? As the fourth and final major championship of the year approaches, all eyes are on Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland for the 153rd Open Championship golf tournament.

Here is all you need to know about The Open 2025 including the date, course and all relevant tournament information.

When Is The Open 2025?

Heading into The Open 2025, there are so many narratives that could play out across the four days of golf. Not only that, but there are so many players in with a chance of being victorious come Sunday after 72 holes.

This year’s Open Championship will be played between the dates of Thursday 17th July and Sunday 20th July. World number one Scottie Scheffler looks to add to his PGA Championship major win earlier this year, as he heads the market as the favourite.

The tournament will also see career Grand Slam winner at The Masters, Rory McIlroy, return to his home country of Northern Ireland looking to win the Claret Jug for the first time in 11 years.

As always, the tournament will run over four days – with the opening two days players battling it out to make the cut.

The Open 2025 also marks the fourth and final major championship of the year. So far it has been McIlroy, Scheffler and JJ Spaun who have won the previous three, so who will come out on top and win the 153rd Open Championship this time?

Time will tell between now and then who will go on to win the coveted Claret Jug after 72 hole of action on Sunday, 20th July.

What Golf Course Is The Open Championship Being Played At?

The Open Championship 2025 is being staged at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Portrush, Northern Ireland.

Royal Portrush boasts two high quality golf courses, with the upcoming Open Championship being played at the Dunluce Links course.

The course is a par 71, originally designed by golf course architect Harry Colt. It is over 7,337 yards in length and is widely regarded as one of the best golf courses in the world.

Royal Portrush is consistently ranked near the top of all lists of the world’s best golf courses. It may not be as gruelling a test as Oakmont, where JJ Spaun sank a 65-foot monster putt to win the US Open in the last men’s major, but it is a truly beautiful links course.

How Many Times Has The Open Championship Been Staged At Royal Portrush?

The Open 2025 will mark the third time Royal Portrush has hosted this particular major championship. It first hosted it in 1951, which also happened to be the first Open Championship held outside of the island of Great Britain.

It then hosted the 148th Open Championship six years ago, with this year set to be the third staging of The Open at the picturesque Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.

The 1951 Open Championship was won by Max Faulkner on a score of -3. This marked Faulkner’s one and only major triumph, winning by just two strokes.

The 2019 Open was won by Irishman Shane Lowry, which remains his one and only major championship win to date. He will be returning to Royal Portrush with fond memories, having won the 148th Open Championship by six strokes to Tommy Fleetwood on a score of -15.

Lowry also broke the course record the last time The Open was at Portrush, shooting a score of 63 on Saturday’s ‘Moving Day’ to all but secure victory with 18-holes still to play. Quite a remarkable performance.

  • 1951 – Max Faulkner (-3)

Who Won The 2024 Open Championship Last Year?

The 152nd Open Championship was held at Royal Troon last year, where Xander Schauffele reigned supreme to win his second major of the year and first Claret Jug.

Schauffele, who’s net worth has surpassed $20m, shot a four-round score of 275 shots, winning by two strokes on a score of -9 par.

This meant that the two-time major champion pocketed the $3.1m purse for his win as well as claiming the coveted Claret Jug for the first time in his career.

The American aims to become the first back-to-back Open Championship winner since Irishman Padraig Harrington, who won successive Open’s in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Ironically, this came after the great Tiger Woods, who is set to miss The Open 2025 at Royal Portrush, won back-to-back Claret Jugs in 2005 and 2006.
