Joey Logano bursts on scene at a young age

When Joey Logano made his NASCAR debut in 2008, there was already a buzz about the young driver from Connecticut being destined for greatness. Just three races into his young career, the 18-year-old Logano backed up the hype winning his first race, the Meijer 300 at Kentucky Speedway on the Nationwide Series.

With that victory, Logano became the youngest driver to win a Nationwide Series race at 18 years, 21 days old. Just over a year later, Logano continued to set records when he became the youngest winner in Cup Series history, holding off veterans Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart to capture a victory at the 2009 Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He was just 19 years, 35 days.

With those two victories, Logano became the youngest winner in two of NASCAR’s three top divisions. And he was just getting started.

Joey Logano establishes himself as top NASCAR driver

Logano hasn’t slowed down since that first year when he won the Sunoco Rookie of the Year award. In 2010, Logano set another record winning the pole at the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor speedway, becoming the youngest ever to do so.

For the next several years, however, Logano struggled to maintain any consistency. He earned a victory in 2012 at the Pocono 400, but it was the only time he managed make it to the winner’s circle on the Cup Series. In 2013, he switched from Joe Gibbs Racing to Penske Racing and that’s when his fortunes began to change.

He had his breakout season in 2014, with 22 top-10 finishes and five victories. That year was a springboard for 2015, where Logano had the best season of his career. The 2015 year started off promising as Logano won the Daytona 500 to open the season. It was the first of six wins that year including one stretch at the end of the season where he won three races in a row at Charlotte, Kansas, and Talladega.

In 2016, Logano narrowly missed winning his first Cup Series Championship, but closed the deal in 2018 holding off both Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick to claim the season title.
