Carson Wentz desperately needs to break out of his early-season slump, but that doesn’t look promising with the wide receiving core he’ll be throwing to on Sunday night.

Wentz hasn’t had a particularly impressive supporting case over the last few years. He finished last season with Greg Ward, a former college quarterback, as his No. 1 receiver. Wentz still led the Eagles to the postseason with the rag-tag bunch, but you can only survive with that lack of talent for so long. The QB might have his toughest test to date coming up on Sunday against the 49ers, which is really saying something.

Carson Wentz has struggled to start the season

Wentz had high hopes coming into the 2020 NFL season after his sparkling performances to finish last year. He was fully healthy, his Hall-of-Fame left tackle was back, and the front office added tons of speed to his supporting cast.

Even with everything finally looking up for Wentz, he hasn’t capitalized through three weeks of the season. Wentz has thrown a league-high six interceptions in just three games so far. His 59.6% completion percentage is the worst of his professional career.

Wentz has been the most inaccurate quarterback in the NFL so far in 2020. He leads the league in uncatchable balls thrown through three weeks. Mitch Trubisky is second on that list, and he was benched in the second half in Week 3.

What’s worst of all is the Eagles’ offense was mostly healthy for the first three games, so Wentz had no excuse to play poorly. But that’s not the case heading into their Week 4 matchup with the 49ers.

Death, taxes, and the Philadelphia Eagles having an injury-plagued football team.

The Eagles have been one of the most injury-stricken teams in the NFL over the past few years. That’s continued this season, and it’s hit the offense especially hard.

Wentz will be down multiple offensive weapons when he suits up this Sunday. The Eagles will be without Dallas Goedert, DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffery, and Jalen Reagor against San Francisco. Only one healthy receiver from the 53-man roster practiced for Philadelphia on Thursday.

For someone who’s struggling as much as Wentz, that isn’t a great omen for him breaking out of his slump this weekend.

The WR core available for Sunday is comical

The Eagles have been undermanned on offense for what seems like a decade, but it might never be worse than it is right now. Philadelphia is down to just four healthy wide receivers, and none of them should inspire any confidence from Wentz.

Greg Ward, Deontay Burnett, John Hightower, and Travis Fulgham will be the only four WRs suiting up for the Eagles on Sunday, and two of them were called up from the practice squad earlier this week. Ward is by far the most accomplished of the bunch, which is troublesome, to say the least. The group has combined for 60 catches in the NFL. Ward has 42 of them.

The Eagles might have to pull another Invincible and hold tryouts in Philadelphia to even field a team for Week 4.
