Carson Wentz Just Gave the Philadelphia Eagles a Stern Ultimatum
The Carson Wentz situation in Philadelphia has become quite the messy one, and it just took another surprising turn. A week after Wentz was benched for Jalen Hurts, the former Pro Bowl quarterback has reportedly given the Eagles a stern ultimatum regarding his future.
The Eagles paid Carson Wentz like a top-tier QB
After the 2017 season, the Eagles believed Carson Wentz was going to be their franchise quarterback for years to come. And why wouldn’t they? Wentz was on his way to a possible NFL MVP award after leading Philadelphia to an 11-2 start to the year, but a season-ending injury against the Los Angeles Rams spoiled his breakout season.
Wentz was efficient the following season with a far less talented roster and still led the Eagles to the playoffs in 2018. The Eagles were so impressed by Wentz’s start to his career that the team gave him a four-year, $128 million contract extension that kicks in when the 2021 season begins.
After signing his massive contract extension, Wentz led the Eagles to a 9-7 record and another playoff berth in 2019. Again his season ended with an injury, this time in the wild card playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Wentz returned as the starter in 2020 a year before his $128 million contract is set to kick in, but his performance this season has made the franchise regret the offer in the first place.

The 2020 season hasn’t exactly gone how Carson Wentz would’ve thought. Wentz went 3-8-1 in his first 12 starts of the season, and he was one of the worst-rated quarterbacks in the NFL along the way.
The former Pro Bowler has thrown the most interceptions of any QB in the NFL (15). Wentz also ranks 28th out of 33 qualifying quarterbacks in total QBR this season (49.7) this season. After 12 below-average starts, head coach Doug Pederson finally went to the bench and replaced Wentz with rookie second-round pick Jalen Hurts.
Hurts went on to lead the Eagles to an upset win over the New Orleans Saints in his first start, and Wentz hasn’t seen the field since. Is it possible he never does see the field for the Eagles again?

Carson Wentz wasn’t paid like a backup quarterback, and he reportedly isn’t interested in being one. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Sunday that Wentz will want to move on from the Eagles if Hurts continues to start for the team.
Wentz is unhappy with the way the franchise handled its quarterback situation, which all started when Philadelphia selected Hurts with its second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft. Hurts has since stolen Wentz’s job, and it might be for good.
