The long game just grew even longer for the rebuilding Oklahoma City Thunder.
On Thursday morning, the team announced that No. 2 overall pick Chet Holmgren will miss the entire 2022-23 NBA season due to a Lisfranc injury to his right foot. The 20-year-old suffered the injury while guarding LeBron James in a pro-am game over the weekend.
Holmgren was set to enter the season as the betting favorite to win Rookie of the Year, but now there’s a new name in the No. 1 spot. So, let’s check out the updated NBA Rookie of the Year odds after Holmgren’s unfortunate injury news.
Chet Holmgren ruled out for the season due to a foot injury
Throughout the NBA offseason, players routinely compete in pick-up games and pro-am tournaments to stay fresh for the upcoming season. Holmgren decided to test his skills by joining LeBron, Jayson Tatum, Paolo Banchero, Dejounte Murray, and Aaron Gordon in the CrawsOver Pro-Am in Seattle over the weekend.
During a 1-on-1 fastbreak, Holmgren forced James into a tough shot and a miss at the rim, but the Gonzaga product came up limping after the play. After undergoing tests a few days later, Holmgren received just about the worst news possible.
The Thunder announced on Thursday that Holmgren suffered a Lisfranc injury in his right foot and will be ruled out for the entire 2022-23 season.
“Certainly, we are disappointed for Chet, especially given the excitement he had about getting on the floor with his teammates this season,” Thunder general manager Sam Presti said in a statement, per ESPN. “We know Chet has a long career ahead of him within our organization and the Oklahoma City community. One of the things that most impressed us during the process of selecting Chet was his determination and focus. We expect that same tenacity will carry him through this period of time as we work together and support him during his rehabilitation.”

Before Holmgren suffered his foot injury, he was the co-favorite (+350) alongside Banchero to win the Rookie of the Year award in 2023. Now, it’s Banchero’s award to lose.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft is now the clear betting favorite at +200 to win ROY. Jaden Ivey and Keegan Murray are right behind at +600, and Jabari Smith (+600) is the only other player with odds shorter than 10/1.
