How long can Adam Gase last as coach of the New York Jets?

Adam Gase appears to be struggling at this head coaching thing. After his head-coaching debut in 2016 when he guided the Miami Dolphins to a 10-6 record, Gase has struggled mightily. He’s gone 20-30 the last three-plus seasons and the pressure is mounting. Although New York Jets CEO Christopher Johnson is backing Gase, how long can the Jets hang on to their head coach?

Adam Gase has always been labeled as an offensive-minded coach. After beginning his coaching career in the college ranks at Michigan State and LSU, Gase made the jump to the NFL as a scout with the Detroit Lions. He worked his way up to quarterbacks coach and then held offensive coaching positions with multiple teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, and Chicago Bears.

After one season as offensive coordinator for the Bears, the Miami Dolphins hired Gase to become their next head coach. He had a very strong first season in Miami, going 10-6 and making the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Gase spent two more seasons with the Dolphins, going 6-10 and 7-9. He was fired after the 2018 season.

The New York Jets hired Gase to begin the 2019 season. They wanted to pair Gase with their young quarterback Sam Darnold. Injuries took their toll on the Jets a year ago and New York finished 7-9 in Gase’s first year with the team. This year, the Jets are off to an ugly 0-2 start.

Jamal Adams blasted Adam Gase before being traded

While many fans have grown impatient with the New York Jets under the leadership of Adam Gase, one player specifically called out Gase. Jamal Adams, albeit an unhappy camper with the New York Jets before being traded this summer, called out the coach before the trade.

“I don’t feel like he’s the right leader for this organization to reach the Promised Land,” Adams said to the New York Daily News in July. “As a leader, what really bothers me is that he doesn’t have a relationship with everybody in the building. At the end of the day, he doesn’t address the team.

“If there’s a problem in the locker room, he lets another coach address the team. If we’re playing sh—y and we’re losing, he doesn’t address the entire team as a group at halftime. He’ll walk out of the locker room and let another coach handle it.”

Gase has the backing of the Jets CEO

Sometimes it can be the kiss of death when the team owner or general manager stresses their support for a coach. In any case, New York Jets CEO Christopher Johnson has stated Gase has his full support. Johnson referred to Gase as a “brilliant offensive mind.” He said Gase and quarterback Sam Darnold need more time together and not to expect any immediate changes.

“I have full confidence in Adam,” Johnson said, according to ESPN. “I think that he has a lot more in him as a head coach than some of our fans are giving him credit for. And I understand they want to see success. I think that they will.”

Johnson his confidence level in both Gase and Darnold is very high. “Look, I think he can work with and develop quarterbacks,” Johnson said. “I do continue to think he’s a brilliant offensive mind especially. He has my every confidence. I have so much confidence in Sam. He’s the best player I know at turning the page, the absolute best, and I think he’ll turn the page on this last game, I think you’ll see an extraordinary Sam.”
