Joao Fonseca

18-year-old Joao Fonseca of Brazil has been a professional tennis player since 2024.  He is ranked 60th in the world.   Fonseca’s matches, like last night’s loss to Alex de Minaur at the Miami Open, resemble a World Cup soccer event.  Plenty of fans come from far and wide to cheer him on.

That same popularity exists on social media where Fonseca just eclipsed one million Instagram followers.  This is an incredible ascent for the tennis star who almost opted to go the college route and play at University of Virginia.  Fonseca will turn 19 on August 21.  His best Grand Slam finish was at this year’s Australian Open in the second round.  Fans cannot wait to see him on the European clay.  The 2024 Next Gen Finals champion won his only ATP title on the clay at the 2025 Argentina Open.

Joao Fonseca may be the headliner, but he is not the only teenager making waves on the ATP tour.  Let’s compare the resumes and social media presences of his teenage peers.

Jakub Mensik

19-year-old Czech Republic star Jakub Mensik is ranked 54th.  He will turn 20 on September 1.  Mensik has no ATP titles yet though he is in the Miami Open quarterfinals.  His best Grand Slam finishes are three third-round appearances at the 2025 Australian Open and the 2023 and 2024 US Open.

Mensik is barely known or mentioned compared to Joao Fonseca.  His social media blueprint reflects this fact.  He has 42,600 Instagram followers.  Mensik is a year older than Fonseca, has been a professional for two years longer than Fonseca, and has been playing great at the Miami Open, eliminating Indian Wells champion Jack Draper and the possibility of a Sunshine Double.

Learner Tien

19-year-old American Learner Tien is ranked 66th.  He has no ATP titles yet, and his best Grand Slam finish was in the fourth round of the Australian Open.  Tien, who turned pro in 2023, will be 20 on December 2.  He has 38,900 Instagram followers.

Tien had to feel like he was at an away tennis match in his first round encounter with Joao Fonseca.  The Miami Open fans were predominantly wearing the Brazilian colors of yellow and green and cheering for Fonseca.  Tien embraced all of it with a level head and a wry sense of humor when he signed off from the Miami Open on Instagram and listed his location as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
