Jon Rahm’s $3.2 Million Masters Prize Surprisingly Isn’t His Biggest Payday of the Season
The Masters is the biggest event on the golf calendar every year and the tournament almost every player would pick if they could win only one major championship in their career. It would make the most sense if the cash prize for the winner at Augusta National Golf Club was the largest on the PGA Tour schedule.
But it isn’t even close.
Jon Rahm took home $3.2 million for his victory at the 2023 Masters, which made up 18% of the $18 million purse, but that wasn’t even his largest payday of the season so far.
Jon Rahm banked $3.2 million for his Masters victory
Jon Rahm is your 2023 Masters champion.
The Spaniard entered the final round two shots back of Brooks Koepka on the leaderboard, but he fired a 3-under 69 on Sunday to overtake the lead and win the green jacket by four strokes in the end. The victory marked Rahm’s second major championship and his 11th total win on the PGA Tour.
Rahm’s triumph at Augusta National came after he began with a four-putt double bogey on the first hole of the tournament. Incredibly, he made seven birdies and an eagle the rest of the way to card a 7-under 65 in the first round to tie for the early lead. He followed that up with rounds of 69, 73, and 69 to polish off the victory.
For the win, Rahm received a $3,240,000 prize and a green jacket to add to his wardrobe. That’s a ton of dough, sure, but it wasn’t even his most lucrative payday of 2023.
Jon Rahm’s Masters prize wasn’t his biggest payday of the season
Purses on the PGA Tour have exploded this season due to the addition of 13 elevated events (17 including majors) on the schedule. These events feature record-setting purses and strong fields made up of the best players in the world.
Rahm, who’s reclaimed his throne as the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking, has already won three of the seven elevated events played in 2023. He kicked off the calendar year with a comeback win at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, outdueled Max Homa to win the Genesis Invitational, and cruised past the field this past Sunday to win the Masters.
Rahm has won four of the nine tournaments he’s played in this year to rack up more than $13 million in on-course earnings, but the Masters wasn’t his biggest payday of the bunch.
The Genesis Invitational featured a purse of $20 million, and Rahm pocketed $3.6 million for his victory at Riviera Country Club. If you asked the World No. 1 to compare the two victories, it wouldn’t be much of a debate. But one win made him richer than the other, and it’s not the one you might’ve thought.
