Road America NASCAR Cup Series

The NASCAR Cup Series certainly has a fascinating history at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

At 4.048 miles, the motorsports road course is the longest track in NASCAR and is one of only a few road circuits on the planet to maintain its original configuration. Featuring 14 turns, several elevation changes, and a frontstretch on which speeds reach close to 200 miles per hour, Road America first opened in 1955 and hosted its first Cup Series race the following year.

But that first run would be its last for 65 years as the Cup Series didn’t return until 2021. And after two years, the premier series is leaving Wisconsin yet again, replacing it on the 2023 schedule with a street race in downtown Chicago.

It’s not yet known whether the Xfinity Series, which has run on the course every year since 2010, will return in 2023.

As the NASCAR Cup Series has only run three races at Road America, the list of winners obviously isn’t that long, and three drivers are tied with one win each.

Hall of Famer Tim Flock won the 1956 race, leading 17 of 63 laps on the way to a dominant 17-second victory, one of four wins on the year.

While not quite as dominant, Chase Elliott cruised to victory as well in 2021, crossing the finish line 5.705 seconds ahead of Christopher Bell. Tyler Reddick owns the smallest margin of victory in Elkhart Lake, beating Elliott in 2022 by 3.304 seconds.

Will the Cup Series ever return to Road America? We’ll just have to wait and see.
