Connor Mosack is expected to compete for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ top rookie award. The driver of the No. 81 Chevrolet sputtered during Friday’s season-opening event at Daytona International Speedway.

Stalled by a rare issue, Mosack remained on the starting grid while crew chief Blake Bainbridge engineered a hurried transmission change. Mosack eventually made it on the track and compiled four points, but lost out on an opportunity to compete for a Fresh From Florida 250 title. Race runner-up Corey Heim earned the trophy after Parker Kligerman’s machine failed post-race inspection.

Mosack’s troubles started after initially igniting the engine. The truck remained in reverse and he couldn’t roll out to the 2.5-mile banked oval with the rest of the field. After one attempt and return, Bainbridge and his crew went to work and finished in about 17 laps.

“We had a strange issue that’s really unfortunate,” Mosack said via press release. “I never had that happen.

“You never know that those (four) points might mean later this year. I think we’re all even more motivated for Atlanta next week and can’t wait to put this behind us.”
