Russell Wilson was a two-sport professional athlete. He was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in Major League Baseball and taken by the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL. He played both sports in college at North Carolina State before transferring to Wisconsin in his final year when he focused solely on football.
Wilson was selected in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft by the Seattle Seahawks. Five quarterbacks were taken ahead of Wilson, but he has found a way to become the best of all of them.
In college, Wilson’s coach at North Carolina State told him he’d never make the NFL. Wilson has played his entire professional football career with a chip on his shoulder. He’s proven his coach and everyone else who doubted him wrong.
Wilson’s success in the NFL
There were 74 players taken ahead of Russell Wilson in the 2012 NFL draft. He’s turned out to be better than every one of them. Despite being selected in the third round, Wilson was named the starting quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks in his rookie season. He has never looked back.
Wilson has played eight full seasons with the Seahawks. He has never missed a start. He’s been to the Pro Bowl in six of those eight seasons. Wilson has never had a losing record in his professional career.
During his stint as quarterback for the Seahawks, he has compiled a record of 96-47-1, playoff games included. Including the postseason, Wilson has thrown 254 touchdown passes. He has thrown for better than 30,000 yards and completed 65% of his passes.
Wilson ready to ‘break away’
According to Brady Henderson, who covers the Seattle Seahawks for ESPN’s NFL Nation, Russell Wilson was recently asked if he spoke with the team about his desire to do more in the offense. Wilson said he has always strived to be the best.
“To me, I come to play this game to be the best in the world,” Wilson said. “That’s just the bottom line. I don’t wake up to try to be anything different. So for me, I’ve always had those talks ever since I got here, really to be honest with you.
“I think right now, going into Year 9, I’m trying to break away, you know what I mean?” he continued. “I want to be the best in the world to ever do this. I’ve got a lot of great players ahead of me. I think about guys like Peyton Manning, I think about guys like Tom Brady and Drew Brees…I want to be remembered and I want to be able to leave a legacy that people can’t ever forget, and hopefully I can do that.”
