Troy Aikman Reveals What Dallas Cowboys Will Do with Dak Prescott
When it comes to the Dallas Cowboys, Troy Aikman has a unique perspective. Not only did he lead the club to three Super Bowl titles in the 1990s; he’s also covered the team since he started working for Fox Sports in 2002. Aikman has never shied away from providing his thoughts on his former club. The Hall of Fame quarterback recently offered an honest assessment about what he thinks will happen in the future for current Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

After Troy Aikman’s 12 years in Dallas, in which he guided the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl titles in 1992, 1993, and 1995, he’s watched his former club struggle. Sure, there have been glimmers of hope, but nothing ever sustained. Since Aikman left, the Cowboys haven’t made it to an NFC championship game, much less a Super Bowl.
This 2020 NFL season has been challenging to watch for Aikman and Cowboys fans. The Cowboys defense is the NFL’s worst, surrendering 32.2 points per contest.
The Cowboys offense, in particular, quarterback Dak Prescott was the lone highlight of the season up until he suffered a season-ending injury in October against the New York Giants. Prior to his gruesome ankle injury in Week 5, Prescott was on a record-setting clip, averaging a jaw-dropping 371 yards per game through the air.
Since Prescott’s injury, production from the Cowboys receiving corps has dramatically dropped as multiple quarterbacks have unsuccessfully tried to fill the role. To make matters worse, Ezekiel Elliott is having the worst year of his career, including five fumbles in the season’s first six games.
Could Cowboys pursue Trevor Lawrence to replace Dak Prescott?

Dak Prescott’s injury, which has been just one of many that have plagued the offense, specifically the line, coupled with the porous defense, have resulted in a 2-7 record. The Dallas Cowboys are tied for last with the Giants in the NFC East, the NFL’s worst division.
With the Cowboys’ 2020 NFL season all but over, at least from the standpoint of making the postseason, the focus has shifted to the future. For all the teams already counting down the days to the end of the 2020 season and looking ahead to the 2021 NFL Draft, there’s one top prize in Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence.
Lawrence has put up impressive numbers during his three seasons with the Tigers. He led Clemson to a national title in his freshman season and a runner-up finish in 2019. In those two seasons alone, he threw for a shade under 7,000 yards with 66 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
According to most experts, Lawrence is viewed as a franchise quarterback. With one of the league’s worst records and a likely early draft pick in the first round, the Clemson signal-caller has naturally been linked with the Cowboys.

Despite being a two-time Pro Bowler and posting outrageous numbers to start the 2020 season, some suggest the Cowboys might consider Dak Prescott expendable because of the club’s inability to sign him to a long-term deal in the offseason, instead opting to use the franchise tag. Many viewed that contract impasse as a sign the club wasn’t committed to Prescott and his future in Dallas.
While Lawrence is obviously talented, Troy Aikman doesn’t think it’s in the Cowboys best interest to sign him.
“I think all those things kind of work itself out. The Cowboys aren’t in need of a quarterback,” Aikman told USA Today. “I can see where maybe some teams might look at it as, ‘Trevor Lawrence is sitting out there, we’d sure like a shot at him.’ But I don’t think Dallas is in the market for his services.”
Aikman said he fully expects Prescott to don the silver and blue for years to come.
“I think the guy’s a wonderful individual, a great leader, a great teammate. I mean, everything that you want. And he’ll get his money. He got money this year, that’s nothing to be upset about. But his big payday, multi-year contract is coming. And I’ll be the happiest person around for him.”
Cowboys fans will be, too, if it happens.
