Coming from Newark, New Jersey, Shakur Stevenson had to battle at a young age being one of nine children. Since those early days, Stevenson has had an eye toward boxing. In 2014, at age 17, he won a pair of significant events, the 2014 AIBA Youth World Championships, and the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics. It was just a warmup of things to come.
After qualifying for the 2016 U.S. Olympic team, Stevenson went to Brazil where he lost the gold-medal match for the bantamweight division title in a split decision to Cuba’s Robeisy Ramírez. While disappointed in the end result in Rio, Stevenson refocused his efforts and six months later announced he was turning professional.
Since turning pro, Stevenson has reeled off 13 straight wins including seven knockouts. In January 2019, Stevenson fought for and won his first titles, the vacant IBF Inter-Continental and WBC Continental Americas featherweight titles by defeating Jessie Cris Rosales in a fourth-round knockout.
Four months later Stevenson captured the vacant WBO-NABO featherweight title defeating Christopher Diaz in an unanimous decision. In Stevenson’s last fight in October 2019, he added the vacant WBO featherweight title to his resume by outlasting the undefeated Joet Gonzalez in a 12-round bout he won by unanimous decision.

In just over two years amassing a perfect record of 13-0, Shakur Stevenson has started to receive more attention from the boxing world. Stevenson should expect to receive even more notoriety as the headliner for tonight’s card in Las Vegas, as boxing makes its return to action for the first time since the sports world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic back in March. Of course, that’s all contingent on him earning a victory against his unknown Puerto Rican opponent Felix Caraballo.
Top Rank’s promoter Bob Arum, who knows a thing or two about up-and-coming fighters, said Stevenson reminds him of his former star boxer Floyd Mayweather.
“I referred to him as my southpaw Floyd Mayweather because he has the skills, particularly defensively, that Floyd had,” Arum told Sky Sports. “Shakur will be one of the major, major stars in boxing in the years ahead. He relates to people, people want to watch him perform, he is a great personality. We are very high on Shakur. He’s a star and a lovely young man.”

In Shakur Stevenson’s relatively short time as a professional, he’s managed to quickly move his way up the ranks and win the WBO featherweight title. His payouts to date have been what you would expect for a young fighter and Stevenson reportedly has an estimated net worth of $1 million.
But make no mistake about it, Stevenson isn’t settling for regular fights and regular payouts. He’s looking for bigger and better opportunities, even if that means going across the pond and facing IBF champion Josh Warrington on his home turf in England.
“He says he wants to fight me,” Stevenson said of Warrington to Sky Sports. “Then he says he won’t wait—but what’s the wait? I never told him to wait. One minute he wants to fight, the next minute he doesn’t. I call his name, call his name, call his name. What happened? They didn’t [make me the offer] that I deserve to unify belts and go to his territory.”
If Stevenson dispatches of Caraballo in Vegas tonight like most experts predict should happen, expect the rhetoric from Stevenson’s camp directed at Warrington to heat up. Until that fight happens, boxing fans will have to be content with Stevenson taking the ring against whoever is willing to face him. And at this point after months without boxing and sports in general, watching a rising star and talented boxer like Stevenson take on any opponent is perfectly fine.
