Xander Schauffele Finished 4th at the Tour Championship and Still Banked More Money Than Any Winner on the PGA Tour in 2022
The Tour Championship is the best place for PGA Tour players to earn monster paychecks, and there isn’t really a close second. This year, the FedEx Cup Playoffs finale featured a record-setting prize pool of $75 million, with Rory McIlroy winning $18 million for his triumph at East Lake Golf Club on Sunday.
But it wasn’t just McIlroy who went home with a life-changing paycheck.
Xander Schauffele, who finished the Tour Championship in solo fourth place, won $4 million on Sunday afternoon. If you compare that to the rest of the PGA Tour schedule in 2022, Schauffele banked more money this past weekend than any winner prior to the Tour Championship.
Xander Schauffele won $4 million for his fourth-place finish at the Tour Championship
There has never been a larger purse in PGA Tour history than the one we saw at the 2022 Tour Championship. The Tour raised the FedEx Cup prize pool to $75 million this season, meaning the winner would take home the largest cash prize in golf history of $18 million.
McIlroy chased down Scottie Scheffler with a 4-under 66 on Sunday to cash in on the historic prize, but he wasn’t the only one who enjoyed a multimillion-dollar week. Scheffler and Sungjae Im both won $5.75 million for finishing in a tie for second place, and Schauffele banked a cool $4 million for his solo fourth-place finish.
Schauffele put himself in a position to win the $18 million grand prize with a 7-under 63 on Friday, but rounds of 70 and 69 on the weekend dropped him back a few places.
In all, 10 players left East Lake with at least $1 million in winnings. Not too shabby for four days on the links.
Schauffele won more money this week than any winner on the PGA Tour in 2022
Fourth-place finishers on the PGA Tour don’t earn $1 million or more at any event throughout the regular season, but the Tour Championship is a different beast. Schauffele’s solo fourth at East Lake marked the most lucrative fourth-place finish in PGA Tour history.
With the $4 million payday, Schauffele also earned more money than any winner on Tour this season. Taking out the Tour Championship, the richest paycheck this season was $3.6 million to Cameron Smith for his victory at the Players Championship. No PGA Tour winner in 2022 banked $4 million, but Schauffele did just that on Sunday despite finishing behind three other players.
That’s a pretty juicy consolation prize if you ask me.
