Sunday evening saw the conclusion of the fourth round of the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor to wrap up the Florida Swing, and at the end of the day, Peter Malnati prevailed over perennial runner-up Cameron Young.

More than eight years after his first title, Peter Malnati is back on the PGA Tour. Sending his penultimate putt inches from the target on 18, the Indiana native was overcome with emotion, even before pushing the ball into the hole, understanding that he was about to put an end to such a long drought. To claim the second trophy of his career on the PGA Tour on Sunday, the 36-year-old first played a solid first round (one birdie and one bogey) before stepping up a gear with three birdies in a row between holes 10 and 12.

Struggling with Cameron Young at the top of the leaderboard, the man who last won a tournament at the Sanderson Farms Championship in November 2015 waited until the par-3 17th to make the difference by sending a beautiful tee shot less than two yards from the hole. Peter Malnati then recorded his fifth birdie of the day and took the lead solo. At the 18th, the American didn’t hesitate to escape a bunker exit to make par and card the 67 synonymous that propelled him to victory at -12 overall. 

“I told myself I had to do my best every shot. I was so nervous as the end of the round approached. In the nine years since my last win, it’s become a lot harder. The level of talent here, the guys coming in at the age of 20 and ready to play and so good… It makes you wonder. That why I’m looking forward to this moment, it’s an extraordinary feeling,” said the man who has also earned the right to take part in the Masters for the first time in his career.

For the seventh time in his PGA Tour career, Cameron Young had to settle for second place (-10 overall). With a score of 68, the 26-year-old was in the hunt throughout the final round before cracking at the end with an errant tee shot that led to hi, conceding his second bogey of the day on 18. The third step on the podium was occupied by Chandler Phillips and Mackenzie Hughes, who each finished at -9..

Four golfers share 5th place (-8 overall). They are Carl Yuan, Ryan Moore, Adam Hadwin and Xander Schauffele. The latter came close to springing a surprise on Sunday with a 65 (seven birdies, one eagle, three bogeys). Finally, the top 10 was completed by Christian Bezuidenhout and K.H. Lee, who finished 9th (-7).
