Tom Brady has never been one to shy away from sharing his opinion during the heat of battle. Ask Tyrann Mathieu. This weekend during The Masters, the seven-time Super Bowl champ wasn’t anywhere near a football field, but that didn’t prevent him from expressing his opinion in a surprise conversation with Tony Finau, where the football legend mocked him and his fellow PGA Tour competitors for one specific reason.

Tom Brady mocks Tony Finau and PGA Tour players

During Saturday’s round at Augusta National, Tony Finau and the rest of the field took shelter due to a typical spring rain delay at The Masters. Finau was in the caddie headquarters located near the practice range when Augusta member Jimmy Dunne informed him that he had someone who wanted to talk with him.

“So I grabbed his phone and picked it up,” Finau told the Augusta Chronicle. On the other end was none other than Tom Brady. During their conversation, the seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback took a jab at Finau and his fellow competitors.

“In the NFL, when it rains, we don’t stop,” Brady told the one-time PGA Tour winner.

“We had a good laugh about that,” Finau said. “He was obviously watching, and that was cool he was following.”

While Tom Brady was clearly teasing Finau, there was some truth in what he had to say. It was almost a year ago when Brady teamed up with Peyton Manning, Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson in The Match.

It was one of the first live sporting events to return after the sports world shut down due to the pandemic. And to say the event was played in less-than-ideal circumstances is a major understatement. There were torrential downpours at times.

“I was not comfortable the whole time,” Manning admitted after the round. “But raising $20 million as people are going through such tough times, it’s something I’ll always remember and cherish.”

“I don’t normally play in conditions like this,” Woods acknowledged.

Brady let his play do the talking — at least for one hole. On the par-5 7th, he holed out for a birdie from 110 yards. The shot was memorable, but so was the quarterback retrieving the ball from the hole, when he split his pants for all to see.

Tony Finau earns top 10 at The Masters

Tony Finau had an up-and-down tournament at Augusta. After carding an opening-round 74, he responded on Friday with a stellar 6-under 66 to put him in contention for the weekend.

On Saturday, Finau shot a 1-over round of 73 around his conversation with Tom Brady. He finished on Sunday with an even-par 72, but, like Brady at The Match, pulled off one of the most memorable shots of the event on No. 7.

After finding the right rough off the tee and clipping a tree branch on his second shot that traveled just 25 yards, Finau faced a tough third shot under a pine tree to a green protected by bunkers. He blasted a liner below the tree, with the ball never getting more than a few feet off the ground. It bounded through the corner of the bunker and up onto the green, where it caught the slope and rolled back to within a foot of the cup.

While Brady never likely talked to Finau about the impressive shot on Sunday or his top-10 finish, he couldn’t help but be impressed with his play. As the PGA Tour slogan says — these guys are good — especially when not playing in the rain.
