Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the appointment of former Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac as their new head coach, on a deal running until the summer of 2026.

Borussia Dortmund have officially unveiled former Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac as their new head coach.
The 53-year-old has penned a deal keeping him at the Westfalenstadion until the summer of 2026, and he will take charge of his first match with the club on Sunday as they take on Heidenheim in the German top-flight.

Alongside Bayern, Kovac has previously managed Croatia, Eintracht Frankfurt, Monaco and, most recently, Wolfsburg, where he was sacked in March 2024 after going 11 games without a win in the Bundesliga.
He arrives at Dortmund following the dismissal of Nuri Sahin last week, with the club currently occupying 11th place in the table, six points adrift of the Champions League qualification positions and 22 points off the top.
Despite this, Die Borussen managed a 10th place finish in the Champions League league phase, and they will face either Sporting CP or Club Brugge in the knockout phase play-offs next month.
Kovac: “We Are Taking On This Challenge With Determination And Focus”
In a club statement, Kovac commented: “The talks with Lars Ricken (Dortmund’s managing director of sport) were very constructive, with the necessary depth, clarity and knowledge of the situation. All those responsible at BVB gave us a very good feeling during the talks, so I am convinced that we can achieve a lot together in the future.
“The most important thing for all of us now is to have absolute determination, a big heart and the willingness to work hard to represent Borussia Dortmund in the best possible way in the Bundesliga, the Champions League and at the Club World Cup in the summer.
“We are taking on this challenge with determination and focus.”
The eight-time German champions will officially introduce Kovac at a press conference next week.
