Olise and Kane On Target As Bayern Triumph In Glasgow
Scottish Premiership champions Celtic made their long-awaited return to the Champions League knockout stages on Wednesday evening, but they faced a tough task in hosting six-time winners and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
Brendan Rodgers and his side looked to have got off to a dream start though, as Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn smashed home beyond Manuel Neuer after less than 30 seconds. Unfortunately for the home faithful, the goal was chalked off after in-form Irishman Adam Idah was adjudged to have been offside.
The Bhoys continued to give a good account of themselves for the remainder of the first period, but Bayern‘s pressure would eventually pay off, with Michael Olise thundering in the opener on the stroke of half time.
Vincent Kompany’s side doubled their lead just four minutes after re-emerging from the changing rooms for the second period courtesy of England captain Harry Kane, who volleyed home with ease from a corner.
Celtic didn’t back down however, and after having a penalty appeal waved away after a VAR check in the 56th minute, Japanese forward Daizen Maeda halved the deficit with a close-range header on the 79-minute mark.
The result sets up next week’s second leg at the Allianz Arena very nicely and gives supporters of the Glasgow-based outfit some belief that they can cause a monumental upset to potentially advance to the last 16.
