Brighton breezed past Chelsea in a Valentine’s Day Massacre as a Yankuba Minteh double and a Kaoru Mitoma stunner ensured a 3-0 win for the Seagulls.
It was a case of deja vu for both sides as Fabian Hurzeler’s men got the better of the Blues for a second successive week at the Amex.
Japanese star Mitoma got the ball rolling when his exquisite first touch and finish opened the floodgates. Minteh ensured the points stayed on the South Coast when he netted a fine double.
Hurzeler’s side are now up to 8th in the Premier League after they firmly banished the memories of their Nottingham Forest horror show.
As for Enzo Maresca’s side, they are still in the top four but a Man City or Newcastle victory on Saturday will change that. The sides actually meet each other at the Etihad on gameweek 25.
As for the game tonight, Mitoma channelled his inner Dennis Bergkamp with a first touch befitting of the former Holland legend before surging through on goal and finishing with aplomb.
Before the break, Minteh made the half-time team talk much tougher for Maresca when he gave the Blue and Whites a comfortable lead.
The former Magpies man downed the West Londoners again in the second period when he combined with Danny Welbeck to put the game beyond doubt.
Maresca’s goalkeeping situation will come into question again as Filip Jorgensen’s performance left a lot to be desired. Especially after his weak attempt to stop Mitoma’s opener.
