2025 World Darts Championship finalist Michael van Gerwen suffered a shock first round exit to Ireland’s Michael Flynn at Players Championship 3 on Monday afternoon.
Van Gerwen Eliminated In First Round At Players Championship 3
Michael van Gerwen’s first ProTour appearance of the season ended in a shock first round defeat to Ireland’s Michael Flynn at Players Championship 3 in Rosmalen on Monday afternoon.
‘Mighty Mike’, playing on home soil, was beaten 6-4 by Flynn, who is unranked in the PDC’s Order of Merit.

Flynn was called up as a late replacement to play at Players Championship event in the Netherlands, and he produced some impressive 119 and 154 finishes on his way to winning his first ever match on the ProTour.
Van Gerwen had the opportunity to make it 3-3 in the sixth leg, but after missing three darts at a double, his Irish opponent took full advantage to register the first break of the match. Flynn then went on to extend his lead to 5-2, and after shaking off a comeback from the world number three, he secured the win in the 10th leg.
The Green Machine will return to the Autotron for Players Championship 4 on Tuesday. He will then travel to Dublin for the third night of the 2025 Premier League Darts at the 3Arena on Thursday evening.
MVG, favoured by the UK’s best betting sites, goes head-to-head with Chris Dobey in his opening match in the Irish capital. The 35-year-old currently occupies third place in the Premier League table, behind table-topper Luke Humphries and world champion Luke Littler.
Fellow Premier League star Stephen Bunting was also eliminated in the first round at Players Championship 3 on Monday, losing 6-5 to Patrick Geeraets, along with former world champion Michael Smith, who lost 6-4 to Stephen Burton.
Elsewhere, Peter Wright was eliminated after being on the receiving end of a vintage Gerwyn Price performance in the last 32, in which the Welshman put up a stunning 112.15 average.
