Jake Knapp joins list of PGA Tour stars to record sub-60 round

American Jake Knapp joined one of golf’s most elite clubs at the Cognizant Classic – by recording a sub-60 round at the PGA Tour event.

The 30-year-old has put himself in a great position to be in contention for the victory at Palm Beaches in Florida this weekend.

He recorded as 12-under-par 59 in the first round. Knapp holds a four-stroke lead over Daniel Berger, Russell Henley and Sami Valimaki going into Friday’s action.

Should he prevail on Sunday, Knapp would claim the £1,656,000 in prize money which is on offer for the winner.

By recording a score of 59, he joined an elite club by recording a sub-6o round in the PGA Tour.

Jake Knapp Records 15th Sub-60 Round In PGA Tour History

Jake Knapp became the 15th person in PGA Tour history to record a sub-60 score with his 59 on the opening day of the Cognizant Classic in Florida.

It was a perfect day for the American who is ranked No 99 in the world as he set a course record.

He began his opening round with five consecutive birdies. Knapp would add a further seven in his remaining 13 holes at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens.

However, there might have been a sense of frustration for Knapp despite joining the elite club.

That is because he had the opportunity to tie the lowest round in PGA Tour history with a 58.

However, his eagle putt from 19 feet on the 18th rolled wide, missing the opportunity to create further history.

Only one golf star in PGA Tour history has ever recorded a score of 58. That was Jim Furyk at the 2016 Travelers Championship who had one eagle and ten birdies on the final day – as he finished tied fifth.

Knapp joins 13 stars to record a score of 59 at a PGA Tour event. That list includes the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas and Cameron Young.

Furyk is the only player in history to record a sub-6o round on two occasions. Al Geiberger was the first to do so at the 1977 Memphis Classic.
