Who are the best Championship free signings potentially up for grabs this summer? We’ve identified five stars who are yet to pen new terms at their current club.
There’s just under four months to go before a staggering 125 second tier players are officially out of contract on June 30, 2025. That’s according to Transfermarkt.
Admittedly, a small portion of that figure will sign a new deal but the vast majority will likely move on. With that in mind, it got us thinking about which players would prove to be a real coup for the 2025/26 campaign.

The 5 Best EFL Championship Free Signings
Perhaps the best EFL Championship free signing this summer would be Burnley’s Josh Brownhill. The central midfield ace has flourished this season with the Clarets pushing hard for a Premier League return.
At the time of writing, Brownhill has 10 league goals with four assists from his 30 appearances. The 29-year-old has over a century of top-flight games to his name and has a market value of £10.7 million.
QPR defender Jimmy Dunne is another whose future is very much undecided. Title-chasing Sheffield United have reportedly been interested and saw a January bid turned down by the Super Hoops.
Aged 27, Dunne is very much in his prime and has enjoyed a stellar campaign. The Irish star has netted five times from the back and would make a fine addition for a number of Championship and bottom-half Premier League teams.
Another superb Championship free signing comes in the form of Nahki Wells. The EFL legend has bagged goals in all three divisions and still knows how to find the back of the net. Even at the age of 34.
The Bristol City star has been on target seven times this season but overall in England’s second tier, he has 108 strikes to his name from his time at Huddersfield, QPR and the Robins.
Swansea City will do very well to keep hold of Harry Darling this summer. The 25-year-old defender has impressed for the Swans in 2024/25 and interest in the Cambridge-born man is expected to be plentiful.
Similar to Wells, the 6’2″ star has an abundance of EFL experience and reports suggest he has a new long-term contract offer on the table. However, he hasn’t penned new terms so a move away is increasingly likely.
Scotland international and Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn could be worth a punt in the summer. The 29-year-old still has his best years ahead of him and famously kept a clean sheet against Spain in Euro 2024 qualifying.
The Canaries are believed to be keen for Gunn to stay at Carrow Road. However, it appears that the Man City graduate is looking for a new venture after spending four years in Norfolk.
