Chido Obi Martin impresses in FA Cup cameo vs Fulham

Chido Obi impressed Alan Shearer in Manchester United’s FA Cup defeat to Fulham. Could he replace Rasmus Højlund in upcoming matches?

Manchester United’s penalty shootout loss to Fulham in the FA Cup fifth round was a hard pill to swallow for fans and players alike.

The match, which ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of play, saw the defending champions dumped out of the competition after a tense shootout.

While many of the Red Devils’ players struggled to find their rhythm, one young star, Chido Obi, earned praise for his spirited cameo off the bench.

Despite Manchester United’s eventual exit, Obi, who replaced Rasmus Højlund in the 68th minute, stood out for his dynamic performance.

BBC commentator Alan Shearer was quick to highlight Obi’s impact, noting how he was a “real handful” for the opposition.

Shearer remarked, “He’s certainly offered a lot more than Højlund has when he was on the pitch. He’s been a nuisance and tough to play against.”

Obi, who managed three shots on goal compared to Højlund’s single effort, brought a little bit more to United’s attack, showing an eagerness to get into goal-scoring positions.

Shearer continued to praise his all-round performance, adding, “I like what I see from Obi, I really do. He’s certainly given them a different option to play with.”

Ruben Amorim Reflects on Obi’s Potential

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim also shared his thoughts on Obi’s contribution during the match.

While the Portuguese coach acknowledged that Obi still had room for improvement, particularly in terms of maturity and decision-making, he was encouraged by the forward’s desire and tenacity.

In his post-match interview with MUTV, Amorim said, “I think Chido did really well today. Of course, he was a little bit naïve in some moments, but you felt that, inside the box, he wants the ball – something the strikers have and he has.”

Could Obi Replace Højlund in Upcoming Matches?

Amorim hinted that Obi could be in line for a starting role following his promising cameo, potentially replacing Højlund, who has gone 18 games without scoring.

The manager noted the importance of evaluating the physical state of his players as United’s schedule gets busier with Thursday-Sunday matchups.

Amorim mentioned, “Anything can happen in the next games, and during training. We don’t have a lot of time to train, but we need to see the opposition, feel the moment of the player physically in this moment with a lot of games.”

He also pointed out United’s struggles in front of goal, despite creating numerous opportunities during the match.

“We have a problem with goals. Today we create situations, but sometimes you feel that only in set pieces we are going to make some danger.”

However, Obi won’t be able to feature in the Europa League games, as United haven’t registered him in their squad list for the competition.
