Which club in England’s second tier boasts the biggest Championship stadium capacity? The largest ground will come as little surprise to most.
Sunderland takes the honours with an all-seater ground capable of holding just shy of 50,000 fans. However, the Black Cats haven’t had a sell-out at the Stadium of Light since 2015/16.
In that campaign, the Mackems were a Premier League side. This year, Regis Le Bris men average crowds on home soil of 38,995. Which are still hugely impressive figures.
Taking the runner-up spot is Sheffield Wednesday. The famous Hillsborough stadium holds over 39,000 spectators on matchdays. They average 26,095 fans in 2024/25 and haven’t had a sell out in 15 seasons.
In the third and final podium spot is Leeds United. The Whites have the highest Championship wage bill this year. Therefore, it’s just as well that they come close to selling out Elland Road on every home clash this season.
According to Transfermarkt, the Whites haven’t had a full house since their top-flight heydays under David O’leary in the early 2000s.
At the other end of the table, the relegation spots are occupied by Luton Town, Oxford United and Plymouth Argyle. In terms of clubs based in the capital, Queens Park Rangers have the smallest Championship stadium capacity.
Interestingly, exactly ten sides boast capacities over 30,000. Another ten can cater for 20,000-29,999 with the remaining four teams offering seating between 11,850-18,360.
