How Many Times Has JP McManus Won The Grand National?

After having another top Cheltenham Festival – with six more winners – leading horse racing owner JP McManus will be looking for more success at Aintree and the biggest jumps race on the planet. But just how many times has JP McManus won the Grand National?

JP McManus Fired In Six Cheltenham Festival Wins And Will Be Looking For More at Aintree

The famous JP McManus green and gold horse racing silks are witnessed on the tracks in the UK and Ireland most days and recently were also seen in the Cheltenham Festival winners’ enclosure six times.

This took his overall Cheltenham Festival tally to 84 winners – the most of any owner at the meeting – and he’ll be hunting more at the 2025 Aintree Grand National Festival in early April.

Of those Cheltenham wins the biggest came with Inothewayurthinkin, who won the Gold Cup and prevented the treble of wins in the race for two-time winner Galopin Des Champs.

The horse had also held an entry for the Grand National off a mark of 160 and having been hiked up to 175 after that Gold Cup win – did look a handicap blot.

However, connections have since opted to miss the race and save their Gold Cup winner for either the Punchestown Gold Cup or next season.

JP McManus Won Last Year’s Grand National With I Am Maximus

Horse racing fans and ‘once-a-year’ punters will also remember the JP McManus silks crossing the line first in the 2024 Grand National – when his Willie Mullins-trained I Am Maximus did the business.

He rewarded backers with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK as the joint 7/1 favourite and was giving McManus his third Grand National success.

It was also the second National winner for trainer Willie Mullins, having won with Hedgehunter in 2005 – and the first for jockey Paul Townend.

JP McManus Has Won The Grand National Three Times In Total

Prior to the 2024 Grand National win of I Am Maximus, JP McManus had owned two other winners in the Merseyside Marathon.

The first of these came in 2010 with Don’t Push It, who will also be famous for giving former champion jumps jockey AP McCoy his only success in the race.

While the other JP McManus Grand National winner also rewrote the history books. As the first female-ridden winner Minella Times was guided home by Rachael Blackmore in 2021.

JP McManus-Owned Grand National Winners

  • 2024 – I Am Maximus (Willie Mullins)
  • 2021 – Minella Times (Henry de Bromhead)
  • 2010 – Don’t Push It (Jonjo O’Neill)

McManus Is The Joint-Leading Grand National Winning Owner

The 2024 JP McManus Grand National win of I Am Maximus also saw the Irishman join five others at the head of the most successful owners in the race. They all have three wins.

McManus joins Trevor Hemmings, who was also responsible for the last English-trained Grand National winner in Many Clouds.

Plus is also top with the Gigginstown House Stud. They fired in two wins with Tiger Roll after Rule The World won in 2016.

JP, therefore, needs just one more Grand National win to become the leading owner outright.

Leading Grand National Owners

  • JP McManus – 3 wins (Don’t Push It, 2010; Minella Times, 2021; I Am Maximus, 2024)
  • Trevor Hemmings – 3 wins (Hedgehunter, 2005; Ballabriggs, 2011; Many Clouds, 2015)
  • Gigginstown House Stud – 3 wins (Rule The World, 2016; Tiger Roll, 2018; 2019)
  • Noel Le Mare – 3 wins (Red Rum, 1973, 1974, 1977)
  • Sir Charles Assheton-Smith (previously Charles Duff) – 3 wins (Cloister, 1893; Jerry M, 1912; Covertcoat, 1913)
  • James Octavius Machell – 3 wins (Disturbance, 1873; Reugny, 1874; Regal, 1876)

What Are The JP McManus Grand National Runners 2025?

The final Grand National runners will be out on Thursday 3rd April. Which is two days before the big race.

However, at this stage JP McManus still has a strong hand with six entered.

These include last year’s winner I Am Maximus, who is rated 8lbs more this year and will be trying to join Red Rum and Tiger Roll as the only horses since the 1970’s to win the prize more than once.

He could also have last year’s 7th Meetingofthewaters, who is also trained by Willie Mullins.

Plus the former Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle winner Iroko. Who has been popular with the best betting sites in the UK leading up to the race.

While he’s also got Percival Legallois, who is well-fancied by many after winning over hurdles at the Dublin Racing Festival and is also the pick of leading JP jockey Mark Walsh.

Chantry House also sports the green and gold silks, but at the age of 11 you feel it would be a big ask. He’ll be looking to give trainer Nicky Henderson a first win in the race.

  • I Am Maximus (Willie Mullins)
  • Meetingofthewaters (Willie Mullins)
  • Iroko (Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero)
  • Percival Legallois (Gavin Cromwell)
