Former Boro Player Gary O’Neil Favourite For Middlesbrough Manager Role

Gary O’Neil, who made over 100 appearances in more than three years at Middlesbrough, is the 3/1 favourite to replace Rob Edwards.
O’Neil joined Middlesbrough from Portsmouth for around £5million in August 2007 and was part of the team that was relegated from the Premier League in 2009.
After retiring as a player, he quickly built a solid reputation as a coach, working with Liverpool’s Under 23s and on the backroom staff at Bournemouth – who appointed him manager in 2022.
Bournemouth sacked O’Neil in June 2023, but less than two months later he returned to the game as the Wolves head coach. He led them to a 14th-place finish in 2023-24, but he was dismissed in December 2024 with the club in the Premier League relegation zone.
O’Neil has also been linked with several other jobs. He currently features prominently in the next Norwich manager odds market.
Former Liverpool Legend Steven Gerrard Linked with Middlesbrough Job

Steven Gerrard is arguably the most high-profile name who is being linked with Middlesbrough if Rob Edwards choose to leave.
After a glittering playing career with Liverpool, Gerrard’s first senior managerial job was with Rangers – who he steered to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade in 2021.
He left Ibrox later that year to take over at Aston Villa – but he only lasted 11 months there before he was sacked.
Gerrard’s most recent job was with Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League but he left in January.
The SportsCasting traders make him the 7/2 second favourite to take over at Boro
Commentary: SportsCasting spokesman Shane Orton reacted to the ‘Next Middlesbrough Manager Betting Odds’ saying:
“With Middlesbrough sitting high in the Championship table, the job could prove a tempting opportunity for out-of-work managers now Rob Edwards has completed his controversial move to Wolves. Gary O’Neil leads the betting at 3/1, having made over 100 appearances for Boro as a player. He’s also impressed in the Premier League with Bournemouth and Wolves, guiding both sides to safety.
Steven Gerrard is next in the market at 7/2, and his arrival would certainly bring profile and excitement to Teesside. He’s been a free agent since leaving Al-Ettifaq, and his previous experience at Rangers and Aston Villa keeps him firmly in contention.”
