Curragh racegoers saw the Epsom Derby winner Lambourn strutting his stuff on Sunday as he added the Irish Derby to his CV. But after his win – just how many English Derby winners have now followed up in the Irish version and which was the last horse to do the double?
Lambourn Became The 20th Horse To Land The English-Irish Derby Double
Over the years we’ve now seen 20 horses land the English-Irish Derby double – after Lambourn added the Irish Derby at the Curragh on Sunday 29th June.
You can see all the horses that have won both races below.
Lambourn managed to dominate from the front at Epsom earlier this month under jockey Wayne Lordan to give trainer Aidan O’Brien his eleventh win in the race (watch below).
And will if the odds with the best horse racing betting sites are anything to go by, Lambourn will be all the rage to add the Irish Derby to his race record.
The horse was also upholding the Epsom Derby draw stat that’s now seen 12 wins from gate 10 since the starting stalls were first introduced in 1967.
Heading into Sunday’s race, the layers make him the red-hot favourite in the betting to win at the Curragh. And he duly olbiged under jockey Ryan Moore.

Lambourn was giving Adan O’Brien his 17th Irish Derby win.
Plus gave Ryan Moore his third win in the race – after the jockey also won on Auguste Rodin and Los Angeles.
He's done it again!

Auguste Rodin The Last Irish Derby Winner (before Lambourn) To Also Win The Epsom Derby
The 2024 Irish Derby winner was Los Angeles, but he was only third in the English version – meaning we have to go back to 2023 to find the last double Derby winner before Lambourn.
Step forward Auguste Rodin, who was also trained by Aidan O’Brien.
Auguste Rodin bounced back from poor run in the 2000 Guineas that season to win both the English and Irish Derby – with jockey Ryan Moore doing the steering both times.
He raced on at four – winning the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at the 2024 Royal Ascot Meeting – but has since been retired.
The horse now stands at the Coolmore Stud for €30,000, having won almost £5m in total prize money and eight of his 16 races.
Prior to Auguste Rodin’s Derby double – you have to go back to 2016 and Harzand to find the next.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien Won His 17th Irish Derby With Lambourn

Of the 20 Irish/English Derby winners, trainer Aidan O’Brien has saddled six – Lambourn, August Rodin, Australia, Camelot, High Chaparral and Galileo.
But in total the Ballydoyle maestro has been responsible for a massive 17 winners of the Irish Derby.
Which, goes without saying, is the most any trainer has ever had in the race that was first run in 1866.
O’Brien’s first Irish Derby win came in 1997 with Desert King and will head into the 2025 renewal having won the last three with Lambourn, Auguste Rodin and Los Angeles.
Only last week we saw five more Aidan O’Brien Royal Ascot winners, which took his tally at the meeting to 96.
