It’s the football close season and that means this time of the year gives clubs the chance to unleash their new 2025/26 kits – giving fans enough time to purchase (and save up) the latest strip ready for the first weekend games in the middle of August. However, there is some mystery surrounding the new Liverpool kit – as they can’t wear it until August 1st. But why?
Why Can’t Liverpool Wear Their New Adidas 2025/26 Kit Yet?
Liverpool recently completed their £116m record club signing of German star Florian Wirtz and with a new kit deal already signed with German sportswear kings Adidas – this was all shaping up to be the perfect match for the traditional unveiling snaps.
However, 22 year-old Wirtz wasn’t allowed to be pictured in the new Liverpool Adidas kit – but why?
The first pictures of Wirtz were still in the older Nike Liverpool strip (see below) – despite Liverpool making it no secret they’ve already signed a new five-year deal with Adidas

Of course, with Wirtz German too, then Adidas must have been screwing on seeing the initial snaps of Liverpool’s new signing sporting a strip from from bitter rivals Nike.
However, the reason behind all this Liverpool new kit puzzle is the Red’s new Adidas kit deal doesn’t come into play until August 1st.
Meaning any pictures of Liverpool players and games played by the Merseysiders in pre-season will still have the older Nike kit.
Liverpool Will Have To Play Any Pre-Season Games In July In Their Old Nike Kit
This includes their lucrative pre-season tour of Asia in August – which would have been a great opportunity for Liverpool to showcase their new Adidas attire to the big far-east market.
All this is strange, as in season’s gone by new kits are often revealed at the club’s final home game of the previous season.
However, even though some pictures of the new Liverpool Adidas kit have been leaked – the club can’t officially release it until the contract with the German sportswear company comes into play on Friday August 1st.
The good news though for Liverpool is this will be before their Community Shield clash at Wembley Stadium – when last year’s Premier League winners face the FA Cup winners Crystal Palace on Sunday 10th August.
This also means the new Adidas Liverpool kit can’t be purchased by fans until August 1st.
But will be ready for the Liverpool Premier League fixtures 2025/26 – that see the Reds hosting Bournemouth at home first.
Why Has This Liverpool Kit Saga Happened – Was Coronavirus To Blame?
It’s thought that all this kit drama has come about due to the Coronavirus back in 2020.
Before Nike were at the helm of making the Liverpool kit, it was New Balance.
But with the 2019/20 Premier League season not ending until July 26th that year – due to the pandemic – this has had an impact on any further kit deals and when they would start.
Back then a short-term New Balance extension deal was done – in order for NB to see out the longer Covid-impacted season.
Which was more important as Liverpool also won the Premier League that season – so New Balance, of course, wanted their brand and logo in all the celebration shots.
Meaning when Nike took over and signed their five-year deal it also ran over a later period than most kit deal agreements.
Plus, with history repeating itself and the Reds winning their second Premier League title five years on – like New Balance, Nike wanted to be in all the celebration snaps.
Therefore, if this pattern continues – we can expect Liverpool to be winning the league title again in the 2029-30 season. Get your bets on now.
